Even the best and toughest athletes have a soft spot for animals.

Serena Williams graced the world of tennis when she turned pro back in 1995. With her impeccable athleticism and world-class skills, Williams shook the sport by a storm.

“She was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times. She won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the Open Era, and the second-most of all time.”

However, just recently, she announced that she was retiring from the sport and that she would like to focus more on her family.

“I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me,” Williams said in a VOGUE article. “…I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

Apart from her retirement, on August 27, 2022, she also announced that her beloved dog, Lauerlei Linkogle Williams, has passed away.

It’s true that a dog can only live long enough, with a life span of 10 to 13 years, these loyal creatures would eventually leave their dear owners just like what happened to Williams. And ask anyone who had lost a dog, they’d say that it’s as painful as losing a human loved one.

In an Instagram post, Williams posted a few photos of Lauerlei and wrote a heartfelt message alongside it.

“Lauerlei sadly took her last breath yesterday. I am sad but happy for all the time and all the extra I got to spend with her. She lived a long long life. The last year and a half was a bonus. She got to get anything she ever wanted and she was biting toes till the end. Literally. She LOVED chicken and acrobatics. She was the smallest yet toughest little pup and I will miss her… so much. 💔truly the end of an Era.”
