Research suggests that horses have the ability to remember humans. There are studies that show how the animals are able to remember their humans in a similar way they would remember another horse. It’s not something that only happens in movies.
Mikko used to be a wild horse.
Together with other horses, he’s been placed there by the government in a holding area. That’s where he met Emma.
Eventually, he got adopted by a ranch.
That didn’t stop Emma from helping the poor horse. She went to visit him and help him be more comfortable being around humans.
The first time Emma touched Mikko, he got scared.
He’s not used to being touched by people. The idea seriously frightened him.
Eventually, Emma got to touch the frightened horse.
It took her a few weeks to make that happen. She was really patient and made sure that the horse processed things at his pace.
One day, when Emma went back to the ranch, Mikko wasn’t there.
She asked everyone where he was. There, she was told that the horse was sold. Mikko was a lot of work for them. At that point, she thought she wouldn’t be able to see him again.
Two years later, Emma received an email from a friend.
The email contained a link that directed to a Craiglist ad for a horse. When she clicked it, she saw a skinny horse with dull hair. His eyes looked scared and unhappy.
After looking at more pictures, she saw that the horse had a white brand.
She recognized it right away. There was no way she could be wrong about the horse.
It was definitely Mikko!
Emma immediately responded to the Craigslist ad and drove to see the horse. On her way, she was wondering if Mikko would be able to recognize her.
Right after seeing her walk in, Mikko placed her head on Emma’s chest.
He didn’t panic or show negative behaviors at that time. He immediately recognized the woman who went to get him. After settling everything, Emma drove the precious horse to his new home. She was hoping she could make him feel and look better.
Unfortunately, Mikko had a hard time adjusting to his new place.
He ran in circles. Even with two trainers working to make him feel better, he failed to be calm. Everything was so frightening for him. Even touching made him shake.
With lots of patience, love, and respect, Emma was able to make Mikko a whole lot better.
“Two wonderful trainers tried to help him, but he broke their bones and tore their tendons. I was told to kill him. I stopped everything and went about things my own way, it was unconventional at times and just what we both needed.”
After a lot of hard work, Mikko’s happy now.
He’s doing fine with Emma and the rest of her family. He’s having no problems bonding with them, including the dogs. In fact, Mikko’s behaving really well around them.
