Ezphia Rennock and Agricvola met in London nearly two decades ago.

Ezphia was part of the queen’s personal guard from 2000 to 2007. Agricola was assigned to him as his service horse. It worked out for both since Rennock experienced loneliness being away from home. Tough for a teenager.

“Coming away from home as a 17-year-old it was difficult, and Agricola was where I found companionship,” he says. “I loved all of the horses, but Agricola was special.”

Agricola was known as a “proper troublemaker.”

“He was only young so he used to throw people off him all the time, we gradually bonded so he accepted me and our friendship just grew stronger from there,” Ezphia said.

Being a new member, he was assigned to the horse with attitude.

Ezphia, like a story from a children’s book, was able to handle the supposedly troublesome horse. Agricola was young as well, and perhaps the horse knew that his partner was also a young, lonely kid, hence the bond they developed.

Sadly, Ezphia and Agricola had to part ways in 2007 when he began to raise a family of his own.

The former queen’s guard didn’t think he’d ever see his old four-legged friend again.

Until a few years later. Ezphia received a phone call from one of his friends in the Knightsbridge Barracks. Agricola was set to retire. When Ezphia went over to see if he could adopt the horse, he learned he had to enter a bid.

“I used to sit there with him every day and tell him that one day after retiring I would come back and adopt him so we could be together once we had completed our service,” he said.

Knowing that he wouldn’t be the highest bidder, he wrote a heartfelt letter in his bid narrating the time he and Agricola spent together in service. Ezphia wanted to show why he was the perfect owner.

The letter worked!

“Although I was not the highest bidder, they called me instantly and told me to come and pick him up,” he said.

Ezphia still made a bid of £1,000. Someone else offered a bid of £5,000, the highest offer, but the handlers said “there was no question about the matter” and that Agricola would go home with the former queen’s guard.

Ezphia said that his old friend immediately recognized him. “It was as if I hadn’t ever left,” he said.

Ezphia took to Facebook, posting the good news with obvious delight. “This horse helped me through tough, lonely times away from home as a young man,” he wrote. “Today I pay him back.”

Agricola now stays at a Dutchy yard, one of the queen’s yards that Ezphia rents. He visits his old buddy every day and even brings his daughter along so she can bond with the horse.

Time brought Ezphia and Agricola back together. Perhaps it was fate, with the universe knowing full well that a bond like this should never be broken. It’s a wonderful ending to a beautiful story.
