While we can’t save every animal in the world, we can always save one animal’s world. That’s a motto that so many people hold inside them and it has resulted in so many incredible rescues and shelters being built and staffed, all across the world. Just seeing an animal in need is often enough to inspire action on anyone’s part!
For one family, that kindness extended to a creature that doesn’t normally interact with humans.
While dogs and cats are a staple “rescue animal” by humans, there are some more exotic creatures that we will occasionally encounter. For Helena and her family, the resulting encounter was life-changing.
Helena and her family decided to take a vacation and went to the Red Sea.
While they were walking around, they saw a mass of strange material on the shore and took a closer look. That mass turned out to be the body of an octopus! They weren’t quite sure if the creature was dead or not, but they decided to place it back in the water to save it from drying out.
It was the right call!
The massive octopus wasn’t dead, he was just stuck. When he was back in the water, he was totally stored within a few minutes and went on its way. The family had just saved the life of an octopus, one of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean!
“We spent our Holidays at the red sea. While walking along a lonely beach we saw a stranded Octopus in the sand. We were not sure if he is already dead. So we pushed him back into the water. He needed some minutes to recover, then he swam away.” – Helena
That might seem to be the end of the story, but something incredible happened.
The family took another walk the following day in the same area that they had seen the octopus. Beach walks are a pretty awesome thing and while on vacation you take every opportunity to relax that you can get! As they were walking with their feet in the water, however, they saw something coming from out in the deeper water.
It was the octopus!
Next day we went to the same beach for a walk. While walking along the beach we saw a shadow in the water coming very quickly to us. It was the Octopus we rescued the day before, he recognized us! He followed us for a long time while we walked along the beach, all the time trying to touch our feet.
It was almost like the animal knew who had saved it and wanted to say hi! It stayed with the walking family for nearly an hour and kept on reaching out to them, looking for a touch. It was clear that this octopus knew who had saved him and wanted to say thanks.
Did you know that octopus were that smart?
While we don’t think of the floppy creatures as all that intelligent, they are some of the smartest animals on the planet! Recent studies show that they can even recognize people and treat them with affection or anger. Who knew?
