There are plenty of times that our dogs deserve to be hailed as heroes. We hear about dogs saving a human or another animal’s life all the time.

An owner took her dog out for a relaxing time in their backyard, but then, her dog began calling her.

In May 2020, a woman named Viviana Davila and her dog, Hiro, decided to go out to their backyard in Puerto Rico to enjoy some sun together. However, with Hiro’s keen eyes, the dog spotted something unfamiliar on the ground near the fence line. As Hiro approached the unknown object, Davila then noticed that he was acting peculiar, as if he was trying to get her to come.

“I noticed Hiro licking something on the grass. Hiro licked this thing and looked at me, and insisted again by licking it and looking at me,” Davila told The Dodo in an interview. “That gave me the signal that something was going on and I approached Hiro.”

When Davila arrived on the spot, she saw a defenseless baby bird and she knew that it needed her help.

Luckily for the little bird, Hiro managed to call out to his owner and Davila was able to respond well to the situation.

“I instantly looked for a towel and picked her up,” Davila said. “She was very defenseless and helpless.”

Davila took the bird to the vet as soon as possible. She got the poor bird diagnosed and they found out that it was paraplegic.

The vet told Davila that what they found was a baby Quaker parrot and it seemed to have some problems in its lower body; a possible case of paraplegia, which might have been caused by its fall from its nest. With the bird suffering such a condition, it is common knowledge that the baby bird would have had difficulties trying to survive in the wild.

The vet even informed Davila that in cases like this parrot, they would have recommended her to allow them to “put it to sleep.” However, the doctors found out that the bird was a fighter.

Davila and Hiro decided to take responsibility for the baby bird and welcome it to the family.

The bird was not ready to give up, and it continued to be stubborn in the face of death. Davila decided to call the bird “Hope” as watching her indomitable fighting spirit gave her a feeling of hope that the bird would survive. She then provided the best care the bird could get, following the vet’s every instruction to make sure that it would up its chances of survival.

With Davila’s efforts, the bird has begun to recover.

“It has been a week and a half and she is doing far better,” Davila said.

Hope became stronger and stronger everyday and she recognized Hiro as a friend. Noticing that Hiro had been very gentle with the bird, Davila could not help but adore her dog more.

“Hiro has been part of that effort. Since day one he has not left her side,” Davila shared. “Nothing matters anymore for him because he has a new purpose: taking care of Hope.”

Thanks to Davila and Hiro, the bird was given a second chance at life, and she is living happily with them as well. Hopefully, we will get to see more of Hiro and Hope’s friendship.
