Georgina and her husband Christopher are both cat lovers who wanted to open their home up to cats who would typically get overlooked at a shelter.
The first cat they took in was 16-year-old Herbie, a sweet senior cat who loved cuddles and naps.
Unfortunately, Herbie passed away just five months after Georgina and Christopher adopted him. Even though Herbie wasn’t with them for long, the cat made a huge impact on the couple. They knew they wanted to help more cats like Herbie.
“I just kept thinking about all the animals that might only have five months left and would spend the whole of that time in a shelter,” Georgia told Meow. “So we decided we would look for an extra special cat that might take a little longer to find a home.”
The couple started looking around online, and they saw a post about a pair of bonded cats named Toby and Quinton at their local RSPCA.
Quinton was seven years old and missing all his teeth, and six-year-old Toby had Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This rare condition causes animals to have loose, stretchy, and very fragile skin.
Quinton and Toby had been sitting at the RSPCA shelter for months, waiting for someone to take a chance of them. Georgina and Christopher quickly decided that they were the right people to take in these sweet cats.
The couple headed over to the shelter to meet the cats. They were both a bit skittish when Georgina first met them, and they hid in the back of their kennel.
“They were both terrified and huddled right at the back,” said Georgina. “Toby just hid behind Quinton the whole time, trembling.”
Eventually, Quinton came forward and let Georgina pet him. But Toby stayed in the back of the kennel, still nervous around these new people.
Georgina and Christopher decided to take a chance of these skittish cats, and it ended up working out well! The pair quickly settled into their new house, and they became much friendlier. They loved their new parents!
Toby and Quinton love spending time together. Since Toby gets injured so easily, Quinton is always gentle when he plays with him.
“Toby and Quinton are inseparable and Quinton tries to clean up Toby’s face when possible,” says Georgina, “and when they play, Quinton knows to keep his claws retracted.”
Toby’s EDS does cause a few other issues. Since his skin is so loose, his stomach hangs down to his knees. Georgia and Christopher worry that the weight of the extra skin might affect his health later on in life.
“EDS can cause joint problems and the excess weight of his skin makes us think that he will have problems in later life,” said Georgina.
Despite his struggles, Toby is an overall happy cat who loves sunning himself, watching birds through the window, and cuddling with his brother.
“He really is just a beautiful little ray of sunshine,” says Georgina.
