For us humans, camouflage means wearing some green, tan, and brown colors in different patterns, in hopes that we’ll blend into the brush or forest. Well, compared to these animals, our camouflage would be considered pitiful.
These 15 animals have evolved to possess some of the craziest, most mindblowing camouflage techniques you’ve ever seen.
Many of these creatures seem to virtually disappear.
1. A leaf-tailed gecko
Living up to its name, this leaf-tailed gecko is an exact match to the brown, dry leaves it likes to hang out on, making it invisible to predators.
2. Wrap-around spider
Quite possibly the most terrifying thing ever, the wrap-around spider literally wraps itself around tree branches to become nearly undetectable. Nope, nope, nope.
3. Gray treefrog
Look closely, there’s a small gray treefrog perched on the vine that is climbing up the tree. Talk about some impressive camo.
4. Tropidoderus childrenii or Children’s Stick Insect
This vividly green insect is an exact match to the leaves of the plant it perches on. The details are so spot-on, including the ‘vein’ of the leaf down the center of the bug’s back.
5. Buff-tip moth
Somehow, this critter has adapted to look exactly like a freshly cut branch. No, seriously, how incredible is that?!
6. Great Gray Owl
An absolutely stunning Great Gray Owl perches on a branch, seamlessly blending in with the pine tree trunk next to it. A perfect spot to look for prey without calling attention to themselves.
7. Stone flounder
This crazy-looking, bottom-feeding fish can change its color based on the different types of sand, pebbles, and stones it swims upon.
8. Copperhead snake
Can you spot this tan snake with its darker brown pattern? Here’s a hint: it’s pretty much dead center of the photograph.
9. Impala
An impala stares back at the camera, nearly invisible amongst the brush. The white fur around its mouth is basically the only thing that can be seen.
10. Butterfly
This dainty little butterfly beautifully blends in with the flowers that look like miniature versions of the winged-insect. Isn’t nature glorious?
11. Glauert’s Seadragon
This interesting seahorse-like creature has features that make it look almost similar to the waving kelp in the ocean waters.
12. Leopard
You might think that a leopard’s spots would make them easy to…well, spot! But as you can see, that’s certainly not the case. A leopard can hardly be seen as it peeks its head out from the straw-colored brush.
13. Mossy leaf-tailed gecko
It’s hard to wrap your head around how this lizard’s skin can look so much like a tree branch. It’s basically identical looking to the bark.
14. Great Potoo
Similar to an owl, this unique bird has feathers that match the grayish-brown neutral colors of the trees that it lives in. They can be found in the tropical parts of North and South America.
15. Uroplatus gecko
