Scarlette Tibson and Doc the cat both had a rough start to life.

When Scarlette was born, her left arm was enlarged. Doctors did tests and realized she had an extremely rare form of cancer. To save her life, the doctors had to amputate Scarlette’s arm when she was ten months old. The little girl was a fighter, though, and she refused to let this stop her from living her life.

When Scarlette was two, her mom decided to get her a pet. And when she saw a news report about a three-month-old shelter kitten who had her front leg amputated, she knew it was meant to be.

Doc was a stray kitten who had to survive on the streets. One cold day, she hid under a car, trying to stay warm. Unfortunately, Doc’s leg was mangled by a fan belt on the car. To save the cat, vets had to amputate her leg. Her injury was so bad, vets didn’t think she would make it.

Like Scarlette, Doc was a fighter, and she pulled through.

In December 2015, Scarlette, her parents, and her older brother headed to San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus to meet the cat, Doc.

Scarlette and Doc instantly connected. The two shared an incredible bond, and Scarlette showed her love for the little kitten by kissing her on the head.

“It created a lot of joy in our family,” Scarlette’s father told KTLA. “Just because now she understands she’s not the only one.”

Scarlette saw that Doc had staples on her side, and she worried that the cat “had owies.” Scarlette’s mom explained that she had owies like her, and Scarlette nodded. At that moment, she seemed to realize how similar the two of them were.

Scarlette’s family adopted the kitten and brought him home. He and Scarlette continued to bond, and they spent most of their time together.

Doc loves cuddling with Scarlette and the rest of her family. She’ll often jump on their laps when they’re on the couch.
