There are few things on this earth that can unite two individuals, no matter how different they are. Food is one of these objects. Individuals came come together from different countries or even different species over their love of food.

One woman knows this better than anyone, and she has used her extra bread to make lifelong friendships with some pretty cool creatures. She has befriended a group of Macaw parrots, and she gets to watch these beautiful birds in flight each morning.

It all started when she gave a Macaw a little piece of bread. Word spread fast, and soon she had a group of parrots flying to her balcony to get bits of bread. Now the interaction is just a daily ritual.

The Macaw parrot is an exotic and extraordinary bird. Of the 370 different types of parrots that can be found across the planet, the Macaw is the largest species. Its typical wingspan is 60 inches. It has to be extra long to support the immense amount of weight these birds carry. Their average mass of 2-4 pounds is pretty big, proportionately speaking.

Macaws live for about 60 years, and some have been recorded to live longer than 80 years. With a lifespan that long, it is no wonder these birds were able to form such a strong bond with their bread-giver. The pack will be seeing this woman for many years to come.

The video posted below is just one of the many interactions that take place on the woman’s balcony. It follows the flight of one parrot in particular, who seems to be coming from a great distance away. As he swoops in toward the building, he doesn’t slow down to look around; this bird knows exactly where he is going.

He flutters up to his place on the balcony, where he is immediately offered a piece of bread. The bird takes the bread in his mouth, then leans forward and transfers it to his foot. From there he nibbles at the bread bit by bit while his friends are fed.

One parrot lands next to the original, then another, and another. Altogether six parrots sit atop the woman’s balcony, munching on their bread as if they were all sitting at brunch. This is really something special to see.

The woman greets each parrot as it lands, and each one seems to greet her back by releasing a little squawk. Each bird takes the bread right out of the woman’s hand. It is obvious that the two species have developed a strong bond of trust over the years. This experience is proof that patience and generosity lead to extraordinary outcomes.

The opportunity to get close to these parrots and build a relationship with them is certainly a unique one, but this isn’t the only time animals have taken an interest in human food. One monkey had people chuckling when he asked a woman for her drink.

The chimp was living at his enclosure in a zoo when a customer came by with a bag of food and drinks. The monkey couldn’t get the drink he saw out of his mind. He kept pointing at the bag, hoping that the woman would take the bottle out. When she finally did, he did something even more hilarious.

The chimp shuffled over to a hole in the wall. He wanted her to pass some of the drink through the whole! Spectators nearby could not stop from laughing as they understood this monkey’s genius idea.

The monkey pointed repeatedly first to the drink, then to the hole. As the woman poured some of the drink into the slot, the monkey drank it up. This quickly caught the attention of one of his friends, who came to get in on the action.

The two monkeys lingered by the window as the woman with the drink put the bottle back in her bag. If there is one lesson that can be taken from this, it is that food brings beings together, no matter what species they are.

We might all look different on the outside, but on the inside we all want health, comfort, and security. Moments like this make us realize that we aren’t so different after all.
