Senior animals typically have a difficult time getting adopted at shelters. This is especially true for very elderly animals. And so, when a woman saw her local shelter advertising a 26-year-old cat, she knew she had to help him. If she didn’t, no one would.

The cat, Thomas, was surrendered to Baltimore County Animal Services when his owner got too sick to care for him.

The shelter knew chances of Thomas finding a home were slim, and so they started asking rescue groups to take him in. They also posted about Thomas on Facebook in the hopes that someone would adopt him.

Luckily, a woman named Laura Cassiday saw the post and was interested. She and Thomas are actually the same age!

Cassiday went in to visit Thomas, and the two quickly bonded. Cassiday brought him home that day, and Thomas settled in. He loved Cassiday, and he also got along with her four other cats.

Since Thomas is elderly, he does have a few minor health problems, including hyperthyroidism and dental disease. But besides that, he’s in great shape for his age.

While Thomas enjoys spending time with Cassiday and her other cats, his one true love is food. Cassiday makes sure to give him lots of his favorites—at 26, she feels that he deserves some tasty treats!

Thomas is a chill, sweet cat who loves relaxing. He brings a calm energy to Cassiday’s house. While the younger cats are busy playing with toys, Thomas is happy to simply nap in the sunshine.

Many people have sent Cassiday supplies to thank her for taking in Thomas. Cassiday is extremely grateful for everything people have sent. And Thomas—well, Thomas takes his celebrity in stride.

Cassiday hopes that Thomas’ story shows why it’s such a good idea to adopt older pets.

Older cats like Thomas are the ones who are most often overlooked in a shelter, and they’re the ones who need the most help. Plus, even if they are advanced in years, they still have tons of love to give. Just look at how much Thomas loves cuddling with Cassiday!
