In December 2017, a cat in South Africa gave birth to a litter of three kittens. The cat’s owner was shocked when they saw that one of these kittens was born with two faces!
The little kitten had four eyes, two noses, and two months. The rescuer rushed the kitten over to a vet, and the vet told her that the kitten had a condition known as craniofacial duplication. These cats with two faces are also often called ‘Janus cats.’
The vet told the rescuer it would be best to put the kitten down because she had a very low chance of survival. But the rescuer refused to give up on the kitten, and she took her home with her. She named the sweet kitty Bettie Bee.
Over the next few days, Bettie Bee showed an incredible will to live. The little kitten nursed well, and she started crawling around with her siblings.
The kitten’s mom was so happy to see the kitten doing well. She decided to start a Facebook page for the kitten, and she began posting regular updates.
“She is thriving, growing like a normal kitten,” the rescuer told Newsweek. “She has been to the vet when she was one day old. We decided it’s best to take her back for scans etc when she is a bit bigger.”
After a few days, the kitten opened her eyes for the first time. Around the same time, her middle two eyes began merging together.
The rescuer shared a sweet video of little Bettie Bee crawling around, and it quickly received thousands of views. Everyone loved seeing the kitten exploring her home!
When Bettie Bee was 10 days old, her rescuer weighed her. She excitedly reported that the kitten weighed 200 grams, which was right where she was supposed to be.
Unfortunately, when the kitten was 16 days old she got pneumonia. The little kitten fought her hardest, and her rescuer also did everything she could to save her. Sadly, though, it wasn’t meant to be. The rescuer took Bettie Bee over to the vet, where she passed away peacefully. The little kitten didn’t live long, but her 16 days of life were filled with love.
The rescuer decided to keep Bettie Bee’s Facebook page up after the kitten passed away. She explained why in a Facebook post:
“Thank you for all the messages and comments. I will not delete the page. Will keep it up for people who still want to come see her pics and videos.. Maybe even to bring awareness to other special needs kitties who need help.”
