Fiona Loh is a cat rescuer who works with Singapore-based rescue group Saving the Siameses. During her time as a cat rescuer, Loh has seen many cats saved from heartbreaking situations. But one of the toughest cats she’s ever worked with is a two-year-old kitty named Angie.

In the summer of 2017, Angie was found living in a two-bedroom apartment with 94 other cats. All of the cats were sick, malnourished, and very neglected.

Saving the Siameses took all of the cats out of the apartment and brought them to a clean, safe boarding facility. Over the next year, 93 of the cats were adopted out to loving homes. Soon, the only cat left was Angie.

Saving the Siameses tried to help Angie become more social, but the poor cat was terrified of people, and she would lash out in fear if anyone even got close to her.

“Angie was malnourished and extremely timid,” Loh told The Dodo. “She would also urinate out of fear if anyone touched her. She was a wreck emotionally.”

Once all of the cats besides Angie were adopted out, the rescue group decided to close the boarding facility. Loh said she would foster Angie—she had gotten close with the cat.

In early August 2018, Loh brought Angie to her new home.

“After daily observation, I noticed that Angie is not afraid nor timid,” Loh said. “Through a video camera setup, I discovered that Angie explored the room she is currently in and played with toys on her own. But once any human enters the room, she scrambled back into her cage space. And then hissed at the human.”

Loh realized that if Angie was going to find a good forever home, she needed to learn to trust people again. And so, Loh began working with Angie, showing her that humans can be good.

Loh tried again and again to pet Angie, but the cat would hiss at her and try to scratch her with her claws. Still, Loh refused to give up.

Finally, her persistence paid off. One day, Loh went to pet Angie, and the cat let her!

Loh stroked Angie’s back, and then Angie rolled over, showing Loh her belly. Loh scratched that too. She was so happy the cat was opening up!

“It was marvelous,” Loh said. “It just felt like my heart burst with joy.”

Now, Angie absolutely loves when Loh pets her!

The once-terrified cat has become extremely affectionate. She’ll meow when she wants Loh to sit with her, and she’ll knead at her if she wants to be pet.

“She loves belly rubs, and would usually flip over on her side to ask me to rub her belly,” Loh added. “She still needs her safe space in times when she feels unsure, but otherwise, she is doing very well now.”

Now that Angie is doing so much better, Loh has begun searching for the cat’s forever home. Hopefully, she’ll find the purr-fect home for this special cat.

Right from the beginning, Angie is the most traumatized STS cat ever since their rescue on 26 June 2017. Even a year later, the cattery worker whom she saw daily was still not able to touch her. She would hiss, spit, scratch and bite.

When we closed the final cattery on 28 July 2018, Admin decided to take Angie home for rehabilitation. Admin engaged an Animal Communicator Little Black Paws for Angie, and realized the root of the problem is that Angie felt she was “not pretty”. Angie says that nobody would ever want her because she is ugly. We assure Angie that she is just as beautiful to us, and she is just as dearly loved. We now call her “Angie 美美”.
