Plenty of dogs will howl along to their humans singing, but Beanie is quite the songstress!
In fact, over 2 million people have watched the teacup chihuahua sing along with her human grandpa – to a song written especially for her – since the video was posted in January of 2020.
The canine chorus
First, let’s get one thing out of the way that people like to point out just to ruin everyone’s fun – dogs don’t howl to music because it hurts them. Even the American Kennel Club has pointed this out:
“Some people think dogs howl along to AC/DC or a Bach flute sonata because it hurts their ears, but if your dog was in pain, he’d most likely run away from the sound, hide, or cover his head.”
So Beanie is not in any pain – she just loves a good duet!
The AKC says that researchers believe dogs howl along to music in part because they’re getting in touch with their wolf side. When they hear something that sounds like a howl (this could be some kind of music or something like a siren) then it’s simply in their genes to respond.
Other research suggests that dogs even have a sense of pitch. And while it might seem like their howling is a little out of tune, that could be because they deliberately join in at a different pitch in order to differentiate their voices.
Dogs don’t sing along to all music though – in fact, classical music tends to calm them down (just like humans!).
Singing for their supper
Now, you may think your dog is quite the operatic superstar, but one thing you have to keep in mind is their focus on a reward system. If you respond to them – especially with affection – every time they howl to music, they’re going to keep doing it.
We wouldn’t be surprised if Beanie and her grandpa enjoyed quite a few sing-a-longs prior to this video.
Beanie’s World
As far as we can see, it’s Beanie’s world and we’re just all living in it. She’s one very loved dog – both by grandpa and her human parents.
And though she’s little, she’s got a lot of spunk.
“She may belong to the teacup species, but her personality is the size of our universe,” said a commenter.
To be fair, any dog that has songs written just for her is pretty spoiled!
And she shows her appreciation by more than merely howling along. She really does sound like she’s singing! (We dare you not to laugh at the 0:22 minute mark, for example.)
“This is the first ‘singing’ dog I’ve seen that really seems like she’s trying to sing and not just crying/howling at crazy sounds…. So adorable!!” a viewer observed.
While plenty of people mentioned that the chihuahua breed isn’t exactly their favorite, they were all willing to make an exception for Beanie.
It’s easy to fall in love with that sweet face!
And her voice isn’t so bad either – we’re thinking she’s quite the vocalist and gets lots of practice (and perhaps lots of treats for doing it).
