Two office workers were enjoying their lunch outside their California office. They had no idea that they’d have to keep a close eye on that lunch or have it stolen away.

When the workers looked the other way, a stray came up and swiped a slice of their pepperoni pizza.

“The starving little dog had jumped up on the table and literally stole a piece of pizza from them and took off running,” Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox told KPIX.

The two office workers sensed that something was wrong with the dog and could tell that the straggly looking stray needed some help.

So, they decided to reach out to the Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA in East Palo Alto for some assistance.

It took a little while for the rescue staff to find the terrier mix, but eventually, they did. Once they located the dog, the momma dog lead them to a group that was in even more need of help.

When rescuers followed the stray dog they found her little of 1-week-old puppies.

The dogs were living out in the open without shelter and were nearing starvation.

“When our rescue staff arrived on scene the hungry little dog led us to her small nest of six tiny one-week-old puppies,” PHS/SPCA’s Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox told KTVU.

It seemed as if the stray dog knew they were there to help the puppies in a way that she herself couldn’t provide.

Which is why she lead rescuers to her puppies.

‘This poor little dog was struggling to survive on her own, eating whatever scraps of food she could find and trying to take care of her babies,” Tarbox said.

PHS and SPCA scooped up the babies and their mother and took them into their care. The family was placed in a foster home.

The nursing puppies have been weaned but they’re probably not eating any more pizza.

The puppies were named after the British Royal Family. Mom is Queen Elizabeth and the puppies are William, Harry, Duchess Kate, Lady Di, Charlotte, and Meghan.

They were put up for adoption on Friday and so far Kate has been adopted. But you can still adopt the rest of this royal pizza loving family.

Peninsula Humane Society/SPCA is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week and located at 1450 Rollins Rd. in Burlingame, California.

Puppies can be adopted for $135, while Queen Elizabeth’s adoption fee is $120. They’ve already been neutered, spayed, and vaccinated. You can find more information at peninsulahumanesociety.org.

“This poor little thing was could barely even take care of herself and then to be so hungry that she goes and steals a piece of pizza is pretty phenomenal,” Tarbox said. “But the fact that she did that actually lead to her rescue.”
