Mitchell County Animal Rescue in North Carolina was a bit concerned that they would have trouble finding a forever home for one of their furry residents.
Perdita is a 4-year-old domestic shorthair and she’s a bit aggressive, to say the least – so, the shelter decided to put out an unexpected ad for her adoption. Little did they know, it was going to turn her into a viral sensation.
Upon arriving at the shelter after the death of her owner, the staff noticed that Perdita was unruly and difficult to handle.
The veterinary staff did a medical evaluation to rule out any health issues that might be causing her aggressive behavior. However, nothing was found. Sometimes Perdita wanted a bit of love. Other times? Not so much – and she’ll let you know it.
The shelter had to devise a very creative plan when it came to getting this special cat adopted. It would require a family or home with a lot of patience and understanding. So – they posted a very unorthodox ad on Facebook.
“Perdita, we thought she was sick, turns out she’s just a jerk,” the title of the ad reads.
“World’s Worst Cat,” is how Perdita is described in the funny Facebook ad. The text continued:
“Meet Perdita, not for the faint of heart.
LIKES: staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again; the song Cat Scratch Fever, the movie Pet Cemetery (Church is her hero), jump scares (her specialty), lurking in dark corners, being queen of her domicile, fooling shelter staff into thinking she’s sick (vet agrees…she’s just a jerk)
DISLIKES: the color pink, kittens (yuk they are so chipper), dogs, children, the Dixie Chicks, Disney movies, Christmas and last but NOT least…HUGS. She’s single and ready to be socially awkward with a socially awkward human who understands personal space. FREE ADOPTION

Of course, the entire ad was all based on humor. But sure enough, Perdita won people over and the applications began rolling in.
The ad was soon shared nearly 10,000 times and the shelter received dozens of applications for the not-so-nice cat. Who knew she’d be so popular?
It wasn’t long before Mitchell County Animal Rescue posted an update.

Soon, the applications went from being in the tens to being well over one hundred!
“Today has been a pretty great day for Perdita! She has had 115+ applications for adoption, hundreds of emails of love and support and many, many phone calls. If you have called, messaged or emailed and we have not returned your messages, please be patient, we are working hard to speak with everyone we can. We are no longer taking applications for her adoption and have narrowed the search down some today. We will make a decision Monday on her home and keep everyone posted,” said the next Facebook update.
To really sweeten the deal, Arm and Hammer caught wind of Perdita’s social media fame and offered a year’s supply of kitty litter to whoever ended up adopting the grumpy cat.
Then, on January 28th, 2020, just a week after her funny ad went viral, the shelter picked a special family for Perdita to call her own…or not.
