In July 2019, a mama dog and her 11 puppies were brought into the Dallas Animal Services shelter in Dallas, Texas. The shelter’s vets checked the puppies and their mom out and found they were all healthy.

But there was something unusual about one of the puppies: she had a giant handlebar mustache!

For two weeks, the shelter staff took care of the adorable family. But their shelter was overcrowded, and they knew the mama dog and her puppies needed another place to call home. The shelter reached out to Hearts and Bones Animal Rescue, and they said they would take the family in.

“Puppies are at very high risk for getting sick in the shelter environment, so we knew we had to get them out,” Allison Seelig, of Hearts & Bones Rescue, told The Dodo. “We went to meet them last week and were able to find an incredible foster in Dallas who took the entire family in!”

Rescuers from the New York-based organization went to pick up the 12 dogs. The rescuers all wore handlebar mustaches for the occasion!

The rescuers brought the dogs to their foster home in Texas, and the family quickly settled in. Their new foster mom was amazed by the puppy’s handlebar mustache!

“The first thing people ask is generally, ‘Is that real?’ [There’s] a lot of ‘Omg stop it!’ and squealing over her,” Seelig said. “Honestly, her siblings are also so cute so we were all oohing and ahhing over the whole group of them when we met them!”

Hearts and Bones Animal Rescue also decided to name the mama dog and her puppies. They named the dog with the handlebar mustache Salvador Dolly.

The animal rescue decided to stick with this theme, and they gave Dolly’s siblings artist names too. One of the puppies is named Vincent Van Gogh, another is Claude Monet, and another one is Georgia O’Keefe. Their mom is named Gertrude Stein!

The puppies and their mom are all doing great in their foster home. The five-week-old puppies are spending their days sleeping, eating, and playing with each other.

“The puppies aren’t walking much yet, and they spend their days alternating between wrestling and crawling all over each other, snoozing in a cuddle pile and eating,” Seelig said. “Quite the life.”

Once the puppies are weaned, they’ll all fly to New York City to begin looking for their forever homes. Since Dolly has gotten so much publicity, Hearts and Bones Rescue is sure it won’t take her long to find the right home. They’re hoping they’ll be able to quickly find good homes for her siblings and mom, too.
