Winters in Greenland are tough for both the humans and animals living in the country. It’s especially hard for stray animals, who often take refuge in the basements of old buildings.

Dyrenes Venner, a shelter in Greenland’s capital of Nuuk, is working hard to save these animals who have nowhere else to go. In mid-April 2018, they brought in a one-year-old stray cat who desperately needed a home. They named the little kitty Ulla.

Even though Ulla had lived on the streets her whole life, she was still very friendly, and she loved hanging out with the shelter’s staff. She even got along with the shelter’s dogs!

“She’s very lovely and caring,” Inunnguaq Christiansen, a board member at Dyrenes Venner, told The Dodo. “I brought my own dog, Yaris, to the shelter one time and Ulla immediately jumped on the cage.”

There was just one strange thing about Ulla: she was rapidly gaining weight, and her rescuers weren’t sure why at first.

“One of the volunteers came with the comment that Ulla was getting pretty big,” Christiansen said. “Upon closer inspection, it was only around the belly area.”

With that, the rescuers realized the little kitty was pregnant, and they brought her to the vet for an ultrasound. The rescuers were pretty surprised about the news, but Ulla herself was completely shocked. Christiansen captured a photo that showed just how stunned Ulla was!

Christiansen posted the hilarious photo on Reddit with the caption ‘When you find out you’re pregnant.’ It quickly went viral, receiving over 91,000 upvotes and 900 comments.

“I spent the entire evening trying to reply to people … We got some really sweet PMs [private messages] from people thanking us for our efforts; it really lifted the mood for the volunteers at the shelter,” Christiansen said.

Ulla isn’t letting the fame go to her head. She’s now living with a foster family who love her and are hoping to adopt her and her kittens once they’re born.

“She’s been living at a foster family since Thursday on a trial period, and they really want to keep her and all of her kittens,” Christiansen said. “With any luck, it’s going to work out for them.”

Ulla will give birth to her kittens any day now. The whole world is eagerly waiting to hear about this little cat from Greenland’s kittens.

“We got a little greeting from Ulla. She’s fine. She’s still waiting for kittens to report their arrival. In the meantime, Ulla’s family tells me that Ulla suffers a bit of mood swings. It’s not completely abnormal for pregnant women… nor pregnant cats,” Dyrenes Venner wrote on Facebook.
