One of the worst things humans could do to animals is irresponsible breeding.

Some people are very interested and fond of breeding, especially since there’s a market for people who prefer specific breeds or a mix of them. This resulted in the proliferation of the so-called puppy mills.

Puppy mills are illegal and unethical breeders, mostly of dogs. The dogs they have live in inhumane conditions. They are often caged with little-to-no medical care and attention.

Joe Kay is an animal rescuer, trainer, fosterer, and adoption coordinator.

He helps animals find a new and loving home. His stories on social media always get the attention of animal lovers and potential adopters.

This is how he met Sunshine, a French Bulldog and a puppy mill mother. She was shaking so bad and would curl herself up in the corner and avoid eye contact.

However, Joe did not give up on her and waited patiently until she would trust her.

He would slowly introduce himself to her. He would sit in her cage and ensure she won’t get scared.

After two weeks, she started sniffing his hands and trusted him even more. He posted videos about Sunshine and his progress in gaining her trust. That’s where Tina found her and immediately planned on meeting her.

Sunshine was scared of Tina during their first meeting.

Tina saw how thin she was, and the thought of leaving her in the shelter crushed her heart. She thought Sunshine needed some love and care and that she was the best person to give it to her.

Tina brought Sunshine home and promised to make her feel the love she deserved. However, it wasn’t an easy road for both of them.

Tina noticed Sunshine didn’t know “how to be a dog.”

Everything was brand new to her. Thankfully, Tina had another dog named Mia. Sunshine followed everything that she did. She had no concept of play and didn’t know what to do with all the toys or even their bed.

Until a time finally came that she went out of her shell. The zoomies came in, and Sunshine was a whole new dog. She and Mia bonded so well, and Tina couldn’t be even more thankful.

One day, Tina was watching one of Joe’s videos when she noticed something.

She saw how Sunshine’s ears perked up at the sound of his voice. The little Frenchie recognized the voice of the first person she trusted. Her tail wagged with joy.

Tina thought of reaching out to Joe via video call, and Sunshine was so happy to see him on Tina’s phone screen. They agreed to meet to “catch up” with each other.

The day finally came – Sunshine and Joe met again since she was adopted.

She was such a happy dog, prancing in the parking lot towards Joe as her tail wagged with joy. Joe was delighted to see her happy and healthy. Clearly, she recognized the man who she trusted first that led her to her forever home.

The Dodo published this story in memory of Sunshine. She unfortunately passed away six months after she was adopted due to a heart infection she acquired from the puppy mill. While we wish she had more time with Tina, we’re glad she spent her last weeks in a place where she was safe and loved.
