Meet Bowie and Zeppelin: an adorable pair of dog siblings who love each other more than anything in the world!
Two-year-old Bowie is the older sibling. When the Alaskan Klee Kai mix was just a puppy, he fractured his back leg. His parents took him in for surgery, and he got a pin inserted into his femur. Unfortunately, the pin snapped. An orthopedic surgeon told Bowie’s parents that to save his leg, they should insert a metal plate. Bowie’s parents, Karisa Maxwell and Matthew McKee, agreed, and Bowie went in for his second surgery.
Bowie ended up having to get four surgeries on his leg to deal with issues with the metal plates and pins.
After the fourth surgery, Karisa noticed that Bowie was limping and refused to put weight on his leg. She took him back to the vet again, where she was told that the bone was brittle, and Bowie was at risk of infection. The only option left was amputation.
Bowie went in for his fifth surgery, and it went well. Just a few days after the surgery, Bowie was happily hopping around on three legs.
Karisa was so glad to get her energetic, happy puppy back. Bowie quickly learned how to navigate life on three legs. He even figured out his own unique way to get down the steps in his house.
Bowie loved playing with other dogs more than anything in the world. And so, in January 2019, Karisa and her boyfriend decided to adopt another pup.
They decided to get an adorable Golden Retriever puppy named Zeppelin. Zeppelin was goofy and sweet, and she and Bowie quickly bonded.
“They are always snuggling or playing together, even when there are other dogs around,” Karisa told The Dodo. “We were nervous that Bowie would be scared to play with her as she got bigger than him, but she is so gentle with him and plays at his pace and protects him.”
When Zeppelin first arrived at Karisa’s house, she was a bit unsure about how to get down the steps. And so, she decided to watch how her brother Bowie did it.
When Karisa saw how Zeppelin walked down the steps, she cracked up. Zeppelin hopped down the steps just like Bowie. She didn’t seem to realize why Bowie hopped down the stairs!
“That’s the only way she knows how to,” Karisa said. “We have tried to get her to walk one foot in front of the other, but she just looks at us all confused and continues to hop.”
Karisa shared a video of Zeppelin hopping down the steps on Twitter, and it quickly went viral. Everyone loved seeing how much Zeppelin looked up to her big brother!
