We’ve seen unlikely friendships before – they’ve been everywhere in classic movies and shows. Need I remind you of The Fox and the Hound, Tom and Jerry and Homeward Bound?
But if it happens this often, can we really call them “unlikely” friendships?
Seems like some animals get along a lot better than we give them credit for, just like this puppy and this duck.
Now, I don’t know if you’ve tried to approach a duck before, but they’re not exactly the most approachable of birds. There’s just as much a trust game involved as with stray cats and dogs. The difference, of course, being that ducks tend to be a bit scarier since they can flap their wings and peck.
Though this puppy seems to have earned this duck’s trust easily, and they definitely look like they’re best friends now. But as defensive as waterfowl are known to be, puppies are as irresistible as can be.
It’s like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object, if you think about it!
They do everything from snuggle to piggyback riding. It’s freakin’ adorable, and I might just melt from watching it. that’s trust right there.
But this clip comes from a compilation, so there’s a lot more cute where this came from.
Check out this French Bulldog and Leonberger, proving that even size won’t get in the way of physical affection. The little Frenchie hops up onto his buddy’s back. Maybe he saw his owner was playing Monster Hunter Rise and wanted to go Palamute riding himself?
Although the Puppy and the duck are the highlight of this collection, they don’t exactly get much screentime. Maybe they’re camera shy?
To make up for their brief screentime, we’re also treated (or spoiled) to some scenes of a Corgi dragging his butt along and weirding out his cat friend, and a large tabby cat showing how good of a makeshift pillow he is for his baby.
Looking at the puppy from earlier and this baby girl, I’m starting to think that a big, soft friend is way better to sleep next to than a pillow.
And in fairness, who wouldn’t want a big, soft cat or a gentle duck as your best friend? Imagine all the warmth and hugs, and they’d probably protect you too. You’d better build up some trust before you try, though
We’ve all had a cat claw at our forearms when we tried to belly rub them. Talk about learning the hard way.
As cute and tempting as it may be to embrace an animal, you should always stop and consider if it makes them uncomfortable. These puppies, cats and ducks look adorable, but they’re not toys for us to just embrace and squeeze whenever we want. Boundaries, people!
That said, love and trust always go hand in hand anyway. So much like making human best friends, make sure your animals trust you first before you go in for a pet or a rub.
And respect their personal space.
