On December 27, 2018, a cow named Brianna was herded onto a truck heading for the slaughterhouse. The truck drove down the highway, going towards a slaughterhouse in Paterson, New Jersey.

Ten minutes before the truck reached the slaughterhouse, Brianna jumped from the second floor of the double-decker truck. The cow quickly started running for freedom.

For an hour, the cow wandered around the highway, determined not to go back onto the truck. Eventually, somebody called the police. The police then contacted the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage, New Jersey.

Volunteers from the shelter quickly headed out to the highway with their truck. They spoke gently to Brianna, calming her down. Eventually, Brianna laid down on the ground and closed her eyes. She seemed to realize the volunteers were there to help her and were going to take her to a safe place.

When Brianna got to the sanctuary, the vets there made a startling discovery: she was nine months pregnant!

The workers wondered if Brianna had somehow known she was pregnant and jumped out of the truck to save her baby. If Brianna hadn’t jumped out when she did, she and her baby wouldn’t be alive.

“I’d like you all to take a minute to contemplate the reality of this,” Skylands Sanctuary wrote on Facebook. “Brianna is a young girl, in great health, very far along in her pregnancy, and was on a transport truck that was taking her to slaughter. She was less than ten minutes away from that slaughterhouse when she flew out of the truck… EVERYTHING was about to be stolen from her, her beautiful baby, and her life.”

After Brianna was checked out by the vet, the volunteers took her to the pen where she would spend the first couple days in the sanctuary. It was the first time Brianna ever felt grass beneath her feet.

Brianna and Winter love spending time together, and the volunteers at Skylands Sanctuary always enjoy watching the mother and daughter interacting. The two cows have an incredible bond!

“Momma Brianna and baby Winter love each other so much. It’s beautiful to watch them together,” Skylands Sanctuary wrote on Facebook.

When Brianna jumped from the truck that was heading to the slaughterhouse, she completely changed her and her baby’s destiny. Now, Brianna and Winter will get to spend the rest of their lives in a wonderful sanctuary with people who care about them!
