The Florida Everglades is a huge area filled with swamps and dangerous animals, like alligators and snakes. It can be a dangerous place to be.

And one poor pup found this out firsthand when he was abandoned in the Everglades.

One chilly day in February, a couple noticed a white dog lying curled up on the ground in the middle of the Florida Everglades. When he got up to find a more comfortable place to rest, he slowly staggered in circles like he was sickly and confused.

The couple spent hours calling every organization they could think of, but it was the Broward Sheriff’s Office that finally showed up.

The deputies were horrified by the dog’s condition. An angry rash covered most of his body, and both eyes were swollen. It was clear to everyone that the poor animal had suffered for a long time.

Despite being nervous, the dog wasn’t aggressive at all.

He even allowed them to pet him. By then, night had fallen, and he was so weak that he couldn’t walk on his own. The deputies called Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue for help.

Sandra, the rescue’s founder, named him Powder for his color and got him the emergency medical care he needed.

Not only was Powder infested with demodectic mange, but he also suffered from entropion — a genetic condition that caused his eyelids to fold inward.

His corneas were ulcerated and inflamed from the constant irritation. He needed surgery to save his eyes, but he was too sick to survive the procedure. They treated him for everything else, working night and day to get him on the road to recovery. When they reassessed him later, he was finally cleared for surgery.

After many months of training and vet visits, Powder is nothing like the shivering, lifeless animal he used to be.

He gained weight, both eyes have healed from the surgery, and his coat is back to a powder white. He also got socialization training to help him with his understandable anxiety around humans. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, he is now a happy, handsome guy.

The last update the shelter gave about Powder said that he was finished with his socialization training and ready to be adopted. Since he is no listed as adoptable on the shelter’s website, we assume he has found his forever home! After all Powder has gone through, we’re so glad he’s doing well and has learned to trust humans again.
