Eve the poodle had a rough life.
The poodle was hit by a car in Midland, Texas, and the poor dog broke both her front legs. When rescuers found her, they realized the injured dog was lactating, but they couldn’t find her puppies anywhere.
Rescuers brought Eve to Midland Animal Shelter, where she received treatment for her front legs. The poor dog was in pain and depressed, and the shelter staff desperately wanted to help her feel better.
Then, the shelter staff came up with a great idea!
The staff had received two litters of kittens—two females and four males. One litter was around 4-5 days old, and the other was 2-3 weeks old. Neither of the litters had mothers, and the kittens needed to nurse. And so, the shelter staff introduced the kittens to Eve.
Eve immediately fell in love with the kittens, and they loved her back. Eve was happy to let the kittens nurse.
Soon after this, local rescue group Cassie’s Place offered to take Eve in. At first, they didn’t know that Eve was nursing the kittens. Once they found about Eve’s ‘babies,’ they quickly offered to take in the six kittens too!
“[Eve] loves the job and duty of being a mom,” Cassie’s Place director Michelle Zrubek told the San Angelo News.
The kittens and Eve quickly settled into life at Cassie’s Place, a 2.5-acre rescue and rehabilitation center.
Eve went for surgery soon after arriving at the center, and thankfully, she quickly recovered. Soon, she was back with her beloved little kittens.
Eve’s whole personality has changed since she met the kittens. The sweet dog has gone from depressed to happy-go-lucky. She loves running around with the other dogs at the center, and she likes hanging out with the staff.
“This sweet girl has not let her injuries stop her from loving life! she is getting around great. Making friends, and enjoying her life being loved by the staff and volunteers at CP,” Cassie’s Place wrote on Facebook.

The kittens are also doing well in their new home.
“The babies are doing great,” Zrubek said. “The ‘blue’ boys are weaning well and learning to use the litter box. The younger litter is trying to get the hang of bottle feeding.”
Once the kittens are weaned and vetted, they’ll be put up for adoption. Eve will also be put up for adoption once she has recovered from her injuries. For now, though, the little family is happy spending time together.
Late this evening we received this sweet momma who had been found after being hit by a car. She was taken to the midland shelter where she was notated to have both front legs broken. She had to remain in an owner hold for a few days but was unclaimed. During that time some kittens were brought in that needed to nurse. This momma lactating and depressed, was clearly nursing puppies before being hit. A search was made but puppies were never found. Shelter staff decided to see if she would take to the kittens and she did!!! Her spirits were lifted, she had babies to love and these babies had a chance to survive. Tomorrow morning she will be seen by Doctor Sheen @ Knickerbocker Road Animal Hospital to get a care plan in place for her healing. If you’d like to contribute to her and her kittens care you can do so by making a donation on our account at Knickerbocker Road Animal Hospital 325.944.9444Or online thru PayPal.Me/CassiesPlaceThank you all for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers
