In March 2017, two police officers in Weyburn, Saskatchewan were patrolling the highway during a blizzard. One officer, Cpl. Sean Chiddenton, spotted what looked like a chunk of ice on the highway, and he quickly served around it.
Chiddenton glanced back, and he realized what had first looked like a chunk of ice was actually a partially frozen kitten.
“I saw something on the road at the last second and swerved around it,” he wrote on the Saskatchewan RCMP Facebook page. “I thought it was a chunk of ice that had fallen off a semi at first, but then thought it looked like an animal,” Cpl. Chiddenton wrote on Facebook.
The officer driving behind him, Cst. Ryan Oram, couldn’t swerve fast enough, but thankfully his car passed straight over the kitten, not harming him at all. After that, Oram stopped his car and got out to check on the kitten. The ginger kitten slowly walked towards him, meowing loudly.
“Our best guess is he was somewhere under a vehicle to get out of the elements. When the vehicle drove away he possibly was still in it and at some point he either jumped or fell out onto the highway,” Cpl. Chiddenton wrote on Facebook.
Oram put the little kitten in his car and quickly drove him to a veterinary clinic. There the vets, immediately treated the cat for hypothermia and frostbite. The cat was so cold, the vets couldn’t even get a body temperature for 45 minutes.
The kitten was a fighter, and despite all he’d been through, he refused to give up. After a few warm baths and some food, the kitten began to recover from his ordeal.
“His attitude and personality started coming back and it was just very rewarding for us for sure and even more so for the kitten,” Dr. Catherine Colodey, one of the vets who worked on the kitten, told Global News.
Cpl. Chiddenton went to check on the kitten, and he was excited to see how well he was doing. He wrote:
“I checked in later to see what happened and was happy to see the little guy was alive and alert and meowing away!”
Throughout everything, the kitten never stopped meowing. One of the vets joked that he sounded like a little lion!
One of the vets, Andrea Clarke, completely fell in love with the little kitten, who she named Ambrose. She decided to adopt him.
Just like that, this tiny stray kitten had a wonderful forever home!
Ambrose is doing great in his new home. He loves his new family, and he’s particularly close with Clarke’s daughter.
“He’s got her wrapped around his furry little finger!” Clarke wrote on Facebook.
Even though Ambrose was in a dire situation, he refused to give up on life. This strong and determined little kitten has found the purr-fect forever home!
