Meet Shortcake: a pit bull whose smile lights up every room she’s in.
This pit bull hasn’t always been so cheerful. Shortcake began her life as a stray on the streets of Fresno, California. When rescuers found her in 2016, she had a hernia and a bad case of mange. The rescuers brought her to a local shelter, and then she went to stay with Fresno Bully Rescue. The rescue group treated the pup’s mange and put her up for adoption.
Shortcake’s mom, Amy Matsushima, saw a photo of the pup online and immediately fell in love with her.
“She wasn’t in the best shape, as everyone that met her back then said that she smelled like rotting flesh due to her mange, but with the care of the rescue and her amazing foster family, she recovered quickly,” Amy told the Daily Mail.
Amy went to meet Shortcake, and she and the dog quickly bonded. Amy decided to adopt the pit bull, and the pup went off to begin her new life in Los Angeles.
As soon as Shortcake got to Amy’s house, she started smiling. And she hasn’t stopped smiling since!
Shortcake is now about four years old, and she still smiles just as much as she did when she was a puppy. Shortcake loves spending time with Amy, and she enjoys cuddling more than anything else. She’s also great with kids!
Shortcake also enjoys going on adventures with her mom. Since Amy lives in Los Angeles, she often takes Shortcake to the beach. The pup loves splashing around in the water.
Soon after Amy adopted Shortcake, she started an Instagram page for her. Photos of Shortcake’s infectious smile quickly went viral—the internet couldn’t get enough of the pure joy on this dog’s face.
“‘It’s been great that she’s been able to bring joy to others, and to help spread awareness of the awesome dogs that can be found at your local shelter and rescue,” Amy said.
Amy also revealed that Shortcake spends the majority of her time smiling—it isn’t something she just does in front of the camera. She even smiles when she’s getting a bath!
“She’s very silly, full of sounds, and playful when she’s not sleeping but even then, she smiles. She really does smile most of the time,” Amy said.
Amy is hoping to adopt another dog soon—Shortcake loves playing with other pups.
“I’m hoping to get a house soon where I can foster and possibly adopt another dog,” she said.
