It is morning time in Mako’s household, which means it is time to wake up his kid and start the day. This happens every day in family households around the world, but Mako’s is a bit different. Why?

Mako’s child is his pet otter. Yes, you read that right, an otter.

Sakura is an Asian Small-Clawed Otter. There are thirteen types of otters and Sakura is a member of the smallest type. The Smithsonian National Zoo states that Asian Small-Clawed Otters weigh,

“…less than 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) and measuring up to two feet (61 centimeters) long—with 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35 centimeters) of that being tail.”

That is tinier than most cats and dogs!

Mako and Sakura are the best of buds. They live in Japan and have created a fun and loving life. Mako created an entire YouTube channel about their adventures together. Luckily for us, Mako created this video that shows how Sakura wakes up in the morning.

It will make you want to have an otter to wake up to like Mako because it is so adorable.

Mako lifts his blankets to reveal that Sakura is sleeping between his calves. Otters are known for cuddling stuffed animals to fall asleep, but Sakura can fall asleep cuddling up to Mako. Sakura was not quite ready to get up and stares sadly as the blanket slowly leaves.

Sakura’s first action of the morning is a big yawn. What a sleepy head.

After the big yawn and a little bit of stretching, Sakura glides up Mako’s leg to get close to Mako. Sakura and Mako have the cutest bond. Sakura just wants to be close to Mako from the beginning of the day. Sakura still wants a slow morning though and cuddles up to Mako.

That is before Sakura realizes he has an itch. Sakura scratches himself just like a cat, who knew.

Sakura starts communicating with Mako through noises right after. Asian Small-Clawed otters can communicate through twelve different ways! The Smithsonian National Zoo’s website explains,

“Asian small-clawed otters are a very vocal species and have a vocabulary of at least twelve different vocalizations. Vocalizations are used for contact, summons, greeting, threat and alarm calls and can occur visually, chemically, or through tactile cues such as social grooming, hormonal changes and posturing.”

Maybe Sakura is giving his morning greeting.

Mako sure knows what Sakura is asking for because Mako immediately put his hand on Sakura’s head for contact. The moment this happens, Sakura quickly relaxes again and stops speaking. Sakura even lets out a big yawn once again.

Sakura must be a slow riser and we do not blame him because mornings are hard.

While Sakura starts to groom himself, Mako starts to pet and cuddle with Sakura. This makes for one happy otter as he lays down and looks straight at his owner. What a cute moment, but all parents know that cute moments do not last for long. Sakura starts communicating again and Mako knows that that means.

Sakura now wants his space and Mako has to remove his arm.
