“I have not seen it all.”

Those were the words written on a post by a staff member of a veterinary clinic. That day, an unimaginable thing happened involving one of the most disturbing cases they handled.

The tendencies of others can surprise and scare us at the same time. But there are still those who act on their instinct to help, most especially if fate seems to have its hand in play.

Bob Hoelter chose to walk that evening.

He was running some errands and was headed to his local store. The weather was freezing and he could’ve been more comfortable if he chose to drive.

But that day, he didn’t. That day, he had his jacket on, enduring a cold 2-mile walk. Little did he know that this was exactly what a desperate soul needed.

Then, Hoelter heard a noise.

He was crossing a bridge when he heard a mix of crying and whimpering. He can’t tell where the cries were coming from but he was sure that it’s somewhere below the bridge.

“I was looking at the water and the land, but I don’t see anything, but I hear it,” he said to the animal content channel. “I walked back to land and I walked around and looked around.”

The crying continued and it only compelled Hoelter to help.

As he searched around the immediate area, he noticed a part where he haven’t looked into. Without hesitating, he went down on all fours and crawled into a culvert.

There, he found one of the most heartbreaking things he’s ever seen. And it made him realize that maybe there’s a power out there that convinced him not to take his car that evening.

He saw a scrawny puppy with his snout taped shut.

Realizing the frigid temperatures, he quickly picked the puppy and tucked him in his jacket. A local veterinary office, the Griffith Animal Hospital, was nearby and he knew he had to get there quick.

The staff at the hospital were also as quick as Hoelter acted. With the puppy’s life on the line, every second is precious.

“I was out of my chair and in the lobby to get him in seconds,” hospital manager Lori Kovacich told The Dodo.

It happened all so fast that she didn’t even get Hoelter’s name.

As they examined the puppy, they concluded that he’s about just a few months old. His temperature compared to the environment also meant that he was fortunately out there for a brief period of time. But his emaciated body meant that he was being maltreated for a long time.

The staff couldn’t believe the sight. An innocent puppy left for dead with his snout taped shut is a cruelty well beyond reality.

The puppy survived the ordeal and was eventually adopted.

An old couple who saw the post fell in love with him instantly. They named him Louie.

And while Louie will now grow in a loving home, the staff and the couple didn’t have the chance to thank the hero. But fate had other plans.

Hoelter’s niece happened upon the post and reunited the puppy to his savior.

And Hoelter’s reward for all of this? Tons and tons of kisses from Louie.

“I was awestruck because I didn’t think he remembered me,” Hoelter said. “They sat him down and he ran right to me.”

While others have a tendency for cruelty, this story just proved that we’re also compelled by compassion and humanity.
