Everybody finds their escape in nature. There is something about communing with the flora and fauna as an escape from the daily hustle and bustle.
It is rare and often a treat when one of nature’s children decide to commune with us humans.
And for a group of beach goers out to enjoy the sun, it was a moment they’ll not forget anytime soon.
It was a fine day at Cadboro Bay beach in Victoria, British Columbia when one of these mammals got bored and decided to swim up to a human for some one on one interaction.
Some of the people noticed an unusual sight in the water and decided to film it. The creature was swimming up to the shore. Curious!
It was a lovely day for a swim.
To their wonder and amazement, it was a sea otter! And look at it! A woman exclaims,
“That is so super random… Have you ever seen one?”
The aquatic weasel swims closer and closer as everyone watched. But the curious thing set its eyes on a man who happened to be in the water.
What’s a curious little otter doing out and about?
The furry swimmer swims right up to the man in shorts and begins to play around his legs. It’s such an astonishing sight that the other beach goers couldn’t help themselves and burst out laughing.
The man reaches down to try and pet it. The curious weasel looks like he wants a belly rub or a biscuit.
“That is the coolest thing. It’s like grabbing his leg. He’s like climbing up his leg.”
They close in for a better view and the otter circles and nudges the man some more.
These little carnivores typically grow to around 4 feet and weigh in around 65 pounds. They can live up to 23 years and are commonly found along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean in North America and Asia. They come ashore to sleep or rest so this turn of events is very unusual.
Sea Otters like to dine on clams and mussels, sea urchins, crabs, squid, and even fish. Sounds good doesn’t it?
Hunted for their fur to the point of extinction, they are now protected by the law
The otter, seemingly puzzled by his new friend decides to see what the man tastes like. The woman even asks the guy, “Is he biting you?”
And as if on cue, the man goes, “Oww!”
It wasn’t anything serious. Sea Otters aren’t really a threat but they have been known to bite when attacked. This little guy was just curious.
The Otter must have felt bad because it went back to snuggling the man.
Otters are quite social creatures. It isn’t uncommon to see them playing with each other in the water or on the shores. This one just wanted to get away from his family, that’s all. He wanted to see the world!
It’s not everyday an Otter makes a new friend.
They are meticulously clean and will wash their coats in the ocean with their teeth and paws.
This is one encounter the man and those beach goers won’t forget. Even the internet loves it. Everyone dreams of interacting with a wild animal. But more importantly, this Otter probably fulfilled his dream of interacting with a human.
