The stirring captured footage was all the proof the farmers needed to see upon their return.

When you ask a friend to watch your pets for a couple of days, you might think they’ll give them a pat on the head or two. But for the most part, they’re there to make sure the animals have the basic necessities until you come home.

One farmer in Ontario was asked if he could “babysit” his neighbor’s cows for a couple of days.

So, he did. And he captured some videos of himself and the cows along the way.

“The herd is happy and healthy and they are very accustomed to being treated well by their owners,” reads the video description. “This is very obvious in the way that they react to the farmers and visitors alike with an abundance of trust. They are curious and affectionate animals, and much smarter than we give them credit for.”

Dave decided he was going to do so much more than just feed and water the cows while their owners were gone.

Instead, he packed up a meal of corn and headed out to the pasture for a day of cuddles and play. The owners had expected him to feed them and make sure he opened and closed the gate on a daily basis.

The cows already have a wonderful life.

They’re given the best possible care by their owners. They have several grassy acres to call their own. There, these cows are free to wander and enjoy the fresh cud and bright sunshine. They also have two ponds of their own, and a view of cornfields and forest. Most of the year, they’re out in the field.

Their owners make a real effort to give them as natural and gentle a lifestyle as they possibly can.

So, suffice it to say, the cows have a pretty nice home.

But when Dave stopped by, he did much more than just give them their basic necessities. He actually spent time with them. He fed them corn, petted them, and romped around with them.

“Dave … found that several of the larger cows were as affectionate as big dogs,” read the video description. “They were eager for head scratches and face rubs. Sometimes, they were even competing for affection, trying to push the other cows out of the way, much like jealous dogs will do.”

One afternoon Dave decided to take a seat on the hill to enjoy the view and sunshine.

To his delight, one of the cows came over and sat down beside him, cuddling up like an affectionate house pet. It might not seem like cows are similar to lap dogs, but these cows make it obvious that they can be.

“Flossey chewed her cud while Dave scratched her head and rubbed her face,” read the description. “Knowing the farmers would want to see how seriously Dave took his job while they were away, he recorded the fun.”

The owners were delighted to see the footage that Dave provided.

Not only could they see their beloved cows were well-treated, but they knew their friend and neighbor would always make an effort to come through for them.
