A mother’s love truly knows no bounds. We say that of human mothers, but you might be surprised to learn that that is also true of animal mothers.

Take this story of a California horse as an example.

When a wildfire hit her ranch, she made sure that everyone in her family made their way to safety.

Normally when we hear about natural disasters, we get images of humans fleeing.

While the human cost of these events is devastating, we rarely consider what these events must be like for animals.

During the “Easy Fire” that blazed through California, an estimated 26,000 people had to flee their homes. But animal evacuations also became necessary as the fire reached ranches and farmlands.

Wildfires were tearing through Simi Valley.

On the outskirts of Los Angeles, the wildfires were burning everything up. In these out-of-control fires, often the only thing for most of us to do is to get out safely and let the firefighters try to contain it.

Animals also have the instinct to run during these fires. When a ranch in Simi Valley burned down, its horses knew to get out and run as far as they could.

A rescue team encountered the horses running away from the fire.

When the rescuers found this herd, they tried to guide them to the road.

The road would be the simplest way to make sure that everybody could get out and head in the direction they needed to go.

So while most of the horses were dutifully heading along the road and towards safety, one of the mares broke away from everyone and galloped back in the direction of the burning ranch.

The rescuers watched in amazement when they realized she was running back to get her baby.

Back behind the fence of the ranch, her baby, a black colt, was running along trying to get out.

When the mama horse realized that her baby was not with her, she ran back to the fence to corral and usher her colt to safety.

There was another horse along with her colt, a bay horse, and they both needed to be led to safety. The black mama horse helped to get them both to safety and saved both of their lives.

Video of this rescue posted on social media inspired many people.

A video of this horse-on-horse rescue went viral, with almost 4 million views. Many people were touched by the horse’s bravery and determination to help her family.

One commenter pointed out:

“Animals are often underestimated. They have the same feelings, etc. We just have a LARGE language barrier. Bless those babies….”

The actions of this brave mama helped save some lives that day.

All but one of the horses from that stable survived the fire that day and they were all moved to safety.

Without the actions of that mother horse helping her baby and another horse find the way out of fires, it’s unclear if those two would have survived. It just goes to show how powerful a mother’s love is, regardless of species.
