When the lights go down and the kids go to sleep, Killian is on patrol.

He has designated himself as “Protector of the Children.”

Which means he guards them at all costs, even through the night.

“Killian will get up throughout the night and go to their bedrooms and check on them,” Killian’s human mom Kelly told The Dodo. “He’ll go to my son’s room and then he goes to the girl’s room. And then he’ll go back into my son’s room and hop into bed with him.”

According to Cesars Way, dogs are known to be protective of children because of their pack instincts.

“A balanced dog knows that the humans are the pack leaders, and its job is to protect them. Just as adult dogs are very tolerant of puppy behavior that would get another adult dog bitten, they seem to understand that children are human ‘puppies,’ and the instinct to protect kicks in,” the website states.

And Killian is exceedingly gentle with Kelly’s kids.

And they love him right back like he’s one of their pack.

“They kind of incorporate him into whatever they’re playing,” Kelly says. “He’ll just lay down by them and let them do whatever they want to him.”

That’s just one of the reasons that Killian is a good boy.

Killian takes his Protector of the Children status very seriously.

“If he can’t get to the kids he’ll usually sit there and whine until we open the door for him,” Kelly explains. “He’s pretty much grown up with all of our kids.”

Since Killian is a good-sized dog, Kelly can hear him stomping around upstairs all night making his rounds to watch over the children.

“It’s really cute actually,” she says.

Since Killian did so well with the children, the family decided that he would be good with another dog.

So, they decided to get a puppy. And that puppy, whose name is Toby, treats Killian just as the kids do.

“This dog is hyper but Killian just lets him jump all over him. He lets him bite his ears, he lets him bite his tail,” says Kelly. “He just plays all day long.”

Killian’s loveable antics were showcased in a video by The Dodo.

That video went viral and was viewed more than 9.5 million times.

More than 1,800 people commented on how awesome Killian is.
