In July 2019, Los Angeles-based animal rescue group Hope for Paws received a call from a woman named Rosie about a stray dog who had been running around a neighborhood for two years. Rosie and her neighbors wanted to help the dog get a forever home.

One of Rosie’s neighbors tied Chaplin to a fence to make it easier for the rescuers to get him. When the rescuers, Loreta and Eldad, arrived, they carefully approached the dog.

The little dog was scared of people—the only person he trusted was the man who fed him. And so, as Loreta and Eldad walked up to him, he wouldn’t stop barking and trying to hide. Loreta and Eldad were gentle and patient with the dog. They slowly approached the dog, and they only put a leash on him when he had calmed down a bit.

Loreta sat with Chaplin for a bit, showing him that there was nothing to be afraid of. Eventually, Chaplin let Loreta pet him.

Eldad and Loreta wanted to give Chaplin something to eat, but they had been in a rush when they left and hadn’t had time to grab anything. Then, Rosie’s daughter Carla appeared, holding a breakfast sandwich. She had been about to eat it, but she felt like Chaplin needed it more.

Loreta was touched by the little girl’s kindness. Chaplin was very appreciative, and the sandwich helped him calm down even more.

“Having yummy smelly food really helps with gaining a dog’s trust,” Hope for Paws wrote.

Once Chaplin was calm, Loreta and Eldad moved him into a cage so they could take him to the vet. Rosie, Carla, and Carla’s sister Brielle all helped move Chaplin. Before he left, Carla and Brielle said a heartfelt goodbye to him.

Carla and Brielle also gave Eldad and Loreta cute pictures they’d drawn of Chaplin. The pictures melted the rescuers’ hearts.

Loreta and Eldad took Chaplin to the vet, where he got a check-up and a much-needed bath. After the bath, he looked like a whole new dog!

Chaplin is now staying in a foster home through Smooch Pooch Dog Rescue. The little dog is loving having a home—he and his foster mom spend their time running around in the grass and playing on the beach.

The Maltese/terrier mix is now up for adoption through Smooch Pooch Dog Rescue. Hopefully, this sweet pup will soon find the right forever home for him. If you’d like to see Chaplin’s rescue, check out the video below.
