As war continues to rage in Syria, many people have fled the country. Unfortunately, they often have to leave their pets behind. Mohammed takes these cats in, and he also looks after stray cats he finds alone on the street.

When he began his sanctuary, Mohammed only looked after 20 cats. But word quickly spread about what he was doing, and more and more people began bringing their cats to him.

Currently, Mohammed cares for over 200 cats.

Mohammed is naturally good with cats. He told BBC News:

“When people left, the cats started coming to me… Some people just left them with me knowing that I love cats.”

In one heartbreaking case, a little girl left her kitten with Mohammed before she and her parents fled the country.

The little girl was devastated to leave the kitten behind, and she asked Mohammed to send her pictures. He makes sure to send her photos very often. The reason why he does this is simple. He says:

“Someone who has mercy in their heart for humans has mercy for every living thing.”

Mohammed has also taken in a few dogs at his sanctuary, including a stray named Amira.

Amira is a motherly pup who loves looking after the sanctuary’s many kittens. She has a special bond with one orphaned kitten, Junior.

Recently, the sanctuary took in a little orphaned puppy. Amira adopted the puppy and took him under her paw. The puppy also gets along very well with all the kittens—he and a few of the kittens have become great friends!

Many of Mohammed’s friends have left Syria, but Mohammed refuses to go—he won’t leave his cats behind. Mohammed made a promise to look after these cats who have no one else in the world, and he won’t break that promise.

Mohammed shares lots of photos of his sanctuary’s cats on his Facebook page. These photos show that these cats are all being well taken care of. They often post photos of the sanctuary’s veterinary clinic, and they also post photos of the cats playing together.
