Stranger Helps Homeless Man Get His Dog Back

June 12th, 2018

As a homeless man, Patrick didn’t have much. He didn’t have a home or people he could rely on.

But he did have a dog and that he loved more than anything.

“My dog eats before I do,” Patrick said. “That dog is my life.”

So, he was completely devastated when his dog, Franklin, was hauled off to the pound. Patrick was going to do whatever it took to get his dog back.

He decided to stand outside of a Walmart in Huntsville, Texas with a sign that said “Dog in pound. Need help.”

He wasn’t able to pay the cost to get his dog out so he was hoping someone would help him.

That’s when Wilma Price spotted him as he was walking out of the store. Price saw the look of desperation on Patrick’s face. As a dog owner, she truly felt for him.

“I looked at him and I couldn’t get over it,” Price told CBS News. “He looked like a little boy standing there lost.”

Price only had $8 in per pocket so she couldn’t help much.

She walked away, but her emotions got the best of her and she turned around. She walked up to Patrick and asked what had happened.

He told her that he had been arrested for trespassing and was thrown in jail for two nights. During that time, his dog Franklin was taken away and to a local animal shelter.

When Franklin got out of jail, he reached out to the shelter.

They labeled his dog as a stray and told him it would cost $120, $10 for each day the dog was there plus the cost of vaccinations.

“I’m not leaving this town until I get my dog,” Patrick told Price.

Price was moved by Patrick’s story and decided to help.

She called up one of her friends and asked if they could pool together funds to get Patrick’s dog back. But before they went to go pick Franklin up, they made sure Patrick had what he needed to take care of Franklin.

And he did, he had a bowl, a package of dog food, and toys. Within two hours of Price’s encounter with Patrick, Patrick was reunited with his dog.

We’re not sure who was happier to see who, Patrick or Franklin.

Patrick was so happy his eyes filled up with tears. Franklin was so happy he was wagging his tail and jumped up into Patrick’s arms.

“You did more for me than most people have done in my life,” Patrick told Price. “You don’t know how much I thank you.”

Patrick and Price’s story have since gone viral.

“I’m always for the underdog,” Price said

Price ended up making a GoFundMe page to help Patrick further.

“The lesson here is don’t judge a book by their covers,” Price said. “That’s the whole thing. We’re in such a judgmental world. Everybody deserves a chance — you never know, in the blink of an eye that could be you.”
