Dogs are quirky creatures who all have their own unique personalities. But five-year-old Golden Retriever Huckleberry is a little quirkier than other dogs.
Huck’s favorite place to hang out is the roof of his house!
Huck’s parents, Allie and Justin Lindenmuth, moved into the house in Austin, Texas five years ago. As they were inspecting the house, they noticed that there was just a three-foot clearance between a hill in the backyard and the house’s roof. It was an easy jump for a big dog like Huck, and Allie knew it was just a matter of time before Huck realized that.
One morning, Justin heard a loud sound on his roof. At first, he thought it was a raccoon. But then, he and Allie went outside and saw Huck standing up there.
Soon, Huck was a constant presence on the roof. Allie and Justin set up some ground rules to keep the pup safe.
“Huck is only allowed outside when we are home and when the weather is nice,” Allie told TODAY. “(He’s) like one of our children and we want to keep him as safe as possible.”
Huck’s neighbors were naturally worried when they saw the dog on the roof. They often knocked on Allie and Justin’s door to tell them that their pup was in a precarious position. Eventually, the couple put up a sign explaining what was going on. It says:
“Huckleberry is living up to his name and learned how to jump onto our roof from the backyard. We never leave him in the backyard without someone being at home. He will not jump off unless you entice him with food or a ball!
We appreciate your concern but please do not knock on our door… we know he’s up there! But please feel free to take pictures of him and share with the world! #hucktheroofdog”
The word about Huck quickly spread through the neighborhood and on the internet. Soon, Huck’s Instagram page had over 39,000 followers. But Huck doesn’t let the fame go to his head—he’s still a relaxed, happy dog who loves nothing more than sun-tanning on the roof.
Huck also has lots of fun off the roof. He loves hanging out with his human brother. He’s also a big fan of napping in the living room!
Still, Huck’s favorite thing to do is undoubtedly hanging on the roof.
“He just sits there and watches the passerby,” Allie says. “He loves it up there.”
Huck is an unusual dog who knows what he wants and goes for it! If you’d like to see more photos of Huck on his favorite rooftop, check out his Instagram page.
