The zoo is awesome, but you don’t usually feel threatened by the animals there.

Whether it’s the baboons or the lions, a thick layer of glass plus a large moat usually makes sure you don’t have to worry about any issues. It’s all the fun of seeing wild animals with none of the safety concerns! Well, as long as you don’t fall into the enclosure, that is.

For one man, a mountain biking trip in Africa turned into a lot more than he had bargained for.

When you’re outside, you aren’t behind the protection of any glass or moats. All you have are your own wits and ability to survive! While that seems scary for some, others view it as a chance to feel alive and live on the edge. For one man on a biking safari in Africa, the zoo was about to come face to face with him.

Timmy was out on a biking safari in South Africa and was about two hours into the ride. They were a bit tired and decided to hop off the bike and walk them for a time. As they walked, they saw a herd of about 7 giraffes off to the side and they stopped to watch them go about their business.

As they watched, however, one of the giraffes was blocking the road.

They stood by and watched the giraffe until finally, something amazing happened. As they stood on a dirt road in the middle of the South African grasslands, one of the giraffes started walking towards them.

Most people would have absolutely panicked here.

It’s hard to understand how big these animals are when you aren’t right next to them.

Giraffes are the tallest land animals. Female giraffes are up to 14 feet tall and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Meanwhile, males are up to 18 feet tall and can weigh 3,000 pounds. – PBS

For perspective, a two-story home is about 18 feet tall – the same height as a giraffe.

As the man watched, however, he realized the giraffe wasn’t trying to hurt him.

Getting right up next to him, the animal lowered its head and started sniffing him! It was curious about the little humans that were rolling around on strange machines that made them go fast! It was all caught on his GoPro and was surely one of the most amazing moments of his life.

Interacting with nature in this way shows is a good reminder.

As Timmy experienced, animals are so much more intelligent than we often give them credit for. It’s an amazing sight to see and feeling awed by the animals in the wild is something that humans have the unique ability to experience.
