Sylvester was freezing cold, and he had experienced very little human kindness. But finally, someone came to save this poor cat.

Sylvester the cat had lived a sad, lonely life.

The cat had spent his whole life sitting underneath the stairs at a run-down house in Ontario. It was so cold, the cat’s water constantly froze. Sylvester was covered in fleas and sores, and his ears were frayed. He also had a bad case of ear mites.

Rob Boisvert, a rescuer with Refuge RR, heard about the poor, neglected cat and went to see him.

“When I got there, I was taken back with just how bad it was,” Boisvert told I Heart Cats. “It was an actual real-life crack house.”

When Boisvert reached Sylvester, he saw a note sitting next to him. It said:

“Please leave cat alone. Cat there for a reason. Thank you.”

Boisvert learned that Sylvester was there to control the house’s rat population. But the sad, listless cat clearly wasn’t chasing away rats. He was too tired, hungry, and cold for that.

“The cat’s whole life was spent under staircase in the hallway,” Boisvert says. “There was no heat in the hallway. The water the cat had was frozen solid.”

Boisvert knew he had to get Sylvester out of this bad situation. Boisvert wrapped Sylvester in a blanket and placed him in a carrier. Then, he brought the cat over to Country Cat Sanctuary.

“He’s a sweet cat,” Boisvert says. “Once I had him in the box, wrapped up in a blanket, he didn’t even try to get out…It was almost like he knew he was being saved.”

The staff at Country Cat Sanctuary nursed Sylvester back to health. Soon, the cat’s ear mites were gone, and he started eating more and gaining weight. Slowly but surely, this sweet cat came back to life.
