When pit bull Whiskey arrived at an animal shelter in Fort Worth in September 2018, she was in rough shape.
The shelter thinks Whiskey was used as a bait dog in a pit bull fighting ring, and the poor pup was malnourished and covered in scars and cuts. Worst of all, she had a bullet wound in her left shoulder. In the end, vets had to amputate her leg to save her life.
Whiskey stayed at the shelter for a few weeks, recovering from the surgery. Once she was well enough, she went to stay with foster mom Kristen Flora. Flora helped Whiskey learn how to trust people and how to simply be a dog.
“Watching her overcome so many obstacles was a joy,” Flora told Dallas News. “It’s inspirational to watch a dog with three limbs and a history of sadness love and just be, without question or sadness or anxiety or any of the things we experience as humans.”
After five months with Flora, Whiskey was ready to go to her forever home. Flora worked with rescue group Bull-luv-able Paws to find the right home for the pup. The rescue group posted about Whiskey on their Facebook page, hoping someone would take a chance on this sweet three-legged dog.
“The chances of a tri-pawed, bait-dog pit bull being adopted was about 1 out of 100,000,” Missy Redding, co-founder of Bull-luv-able Paws, said. “We were not confident of her ever being adopted.”
The Facebook page Lucky Fin Project also posted about Whiskey. This page helps provide a network for people with “limb differences.”
When Jeff Meyers saw the photo of Whiskey on Lucky Fin Project’s page, he knew she was the perfect dog for him. Like Whiskey, Meyers was missing his left forearm.
Meyers was born without his forearm, and he understood what Whiskey was going through. As soon as Redding heard Meyers’ story, she knew he was the right owner for Whiskey.
In February 2019, Whiskey headed to her new forever home. She and her new dad immediately bonded.
Meyers loves having Whiskey in his life. She enjoys spending time with Meyers’ wife and daughter, and she loves hanging out with Meyers. She’ll follow her dad around the house, and she loves going for long walks with him. She also enjoys playing fetch with him in their backyard.
“I know from experience how others will view her and knew that she needed her shot at happiness,” Meyer said. “Lucky for me, it’s just that. She has brought a ton of happiness into our home.”
