Pit bulls Spanky and Roman are the best of friends. The 6-year-old and 8-year-old pit bulls do everything together.

One look at their Instagram page will give you a good indication of what great pals they are:

Adorbs, right?

Well, it turns out they’re pretty thoughtful towards each other too.

Recently, Spanky and Roman’s owner, Jill Rogers, and her sister, Jackie, noticed Roman’s ear looked puffy.

“My sister took him to the vet immediately and they said he had a hematoma in his ear and needed surgery, Jackie told Bored Panda.

Poor little guy.

And thanks to COVID-19, scheduling all of this wasn’t as straightforward as it normally might be, and Roman’s surgery was scheduled a few weeks into the future.

In the meantime, Jill wanted to keep an extra-close eye on her boys any time she was away.

Since staying home 24/7 wasn’t an option, she installed a Ring camera in her home to check-in and see how the pups were doing and that Roman was OK throughout the day.

His ear had been getting worse and she was concerned that he was just too uncomfortable – but the vet told her to hold off and that he would be alright.

Luckily, the dogs had each other for comfort.

“Roman is definitely Spanky’s security blanket,” Jackie told The Dodo. “Spanky will do nothing without Roman and always makes sure he is close to him and if he’s not he gets up and goes near him.”

At first, Spanky didn’t notice anything wrong with his brother. But Jill told UNILAD that, over time, she noticed the sweet white pitbull becoming much more gentle around Roman.

“Spanky is not normally gentle,” she said. “He is like a big moose but when Roman wasn’t feeling good, he was so gentle with him. He didn’t try to rough house or play with him like normal.”

Such a good boy!

Then, one day, she saw some video of the two at home that melted her and her sister Jackie’s hearts.

And what do we do with cute animal videos?

Head to the Internet, of course!

Jackie shared the video on Facebook and TikTok where it immediately garnered over a million views.

Why?

Well, because heart-melting animal videos are basically all that’s keeping society going right now. AND they’re not political. The fact that we haven’t all turned into animal-video-watching zombies just to soothe our nerves and escape from reality at this point is a testament to the human spirit.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in just this one. Plus, it has a thing or two to teach humans about kindness, empathy, and compassion – and not being selfish jerks.

In the short video, Spanky is seen looking over his friend, as Roman lays on the floor in the middle of the room.

What a sweet friendship!

The two reached viral fame (though sadly did not make the world a kinder place as far as we can tell) and Roman did eventually have his surgery, which was successful!

“He is back to his happy self,” Jill Rogers told UNILAD.

He’s not a fan of his ear bandage or cone, but he’s gotten used to them.

Everyone who knows the dogs are pleased they’re getting some attention.

Jackie told Bored Panda:

“It was surreal because I mean we love our dogs and think they are the best and I could talk and post photos of them all day but to see everyone also enjoying them was just a great feeling!”

Thanks for the smiles, boys!
