It’s not easy to leave your pet behind, whether you’re going on vacation or heading out the door for an eight-hour workday. So one would think that leaving for deployment must be absolutely heartbreaking for a person in the military.
Members of the military have to leave their family and pets for long periods of time to do their job. While they know their family will miss them and remember them, the same cannot be said for their pets.
Since pets cannot speak for themselves you never know what your pet is thinking when you leave them behind.
One US Army soldier was nervous her dog would not remember her during her deployment.
Casandra Cabrera was on a ten-month deployment overseas with the US Army. She was able to communicate with her family and friends to let them know she missed them. Yet, she could not do the same with her dog, Missy May, and she was missing her terribly.
Casandra told The Dodo that she, “left when she had just turned 1, and wasn’t sure if she would remember me after all that time.”
Casandra had nothing to worry about. Casandra’s mother, Robbi Cabrera, brought Missy May to the airport with her to pick up Casandra from her deployment. They did not want to delay Casandra and Missy May’s reunion by one minute! Missy May does not realize what she is doing there and is standing with Robbi very calmly.
Yet, the moment Missy May spots Casandra she knows exactly who her mother was and runs straight towards her!
Robbi has to let go of Missy May’s leash, so Missy can show just how ecstatic she is. She is jumping all over her mom in complete happiness. Missy May cannot get enough of Casandra! Missy May missed Casandra just as much as Casandra missed her.
Missy May cannot believe her eyes, her mother is home!
Casandra tries to stand up after a few seconds but Missy May is not having that! Missy May stands on her hind legs to stay as close as possible to her mom. She even starts to lick her face and Casandra does not even mind. She has the biggest smile on her face and is just as excited to be reunited.
Missy May runs back to Robbi, almost as to tell her that Casandra is here, but runs back to Casandra quickly.
Missy May and Casandra’s reunion is filled with hugs, kisses, and long-awaited pets! Every time Missy May falls back onto all four legs, she just jumps right back up into her mom’s arms. It is the most adorable reunion!
Casandra has been far from home for ten months, but it was Missy May that got the first hugs and kisses, even over Casandra’s mom, Robbi! Robbi does not seem to mind at all though and gets the next hug from Casandra. Robbi knew it was a special moment for Missy May to be reunited with her own mom. Robbi even put an American flag bandana on Missy May to celebrate the occasion.
Robbi and Missy May are proud of Casandra’s service. Welcome home Casandra.
It probably took Missy May quite a while to calm down – she just couldn’t help being so happy that mom was home!
