San Diego detective James “Chappie” Hunter lost his leg in a crash. But he did find his furrever soulmate when he fostered 9-year-old Chloe in his family’s Alpine home.

Chloe had a partial amputation of her back legs in March resulting in a 3-month recovery period at the San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido campus.

Hunter and his family eventually decided to adopt her.

Hunter was riding his motorcycle one evening in June of 2013 when he collided with a car on Alpine Boulevard. He lost his left leg below the knee.

He had to spend a week at Sharp Memorial Hospital eventually getting a prosthetic leg after a year of recovery.

Chloe was rescued from a Mira Mesa residence, her back paws wrapped with bandages to prevent the dog from licking and scratching. The problem was the bandage cut off blood flow to her legs since it was wrapped too tightly.

She was there with another dog named Roxy.

Severe injuries had the San Diego Humane Society veterinarians decide to partially amputate Chloe’s back feet and Roxy’s left hindfoot.

Chloe had to be trained to walk again using a wheelchair with prosthetic devices.

Roxy went through a skin flap procedure, almost regaining the use of her injured foot. She now wears a custom prosthetic device on her left leg.

Chloe has orthopedic slippers for both of her back legs.

“Fitting a dog with prosthetics is quite an involved process and this was a first for San Diego Humane Society,” veterinarian Susan Garity said. “It included sedation to create a mold of the feet, getting the prosthetics to fit perfectly, and monitoring for pressure sores.”

Dogs need time to learn to use them, but the staff are dedicated to giving these dogs a second chance.

Agency officials say Roxy is currently in a foster home with another month for recovery.

It’s a similar story for this boy with a prosthetic leg and a pup with a missing paw.

7-year-old Paxton Williams was born prematurely. An infection in his right leg eventually stopped its growth. At the age of 4, his leg was amputated. He uses a prosthetic to help him walk.

Barb Felt owns Rolling Oaks Garden, a farm that breeds and raises high-pedigree golden retrievers. A pup named Marvel was born there. The dog had a missing front right paw.

They posted about Marvel on Facebook, receiving inquiries from families hoping to adopt her.

Barb eventually heard about Paxton, and she that he and Marvel were the perfect match.

She got in touch with Paxton’s dad, Blaine Williams. During their first meeting, it was obvious that Marvel was meant to be with Paxton. It only took 3 weeks before Marvel was finally adopted.
