Sadly, many animals across the world are left and abandoned because of certain qualities they may have. If an owner doesn’t have the patience or the animal has a physical deformity, many times that animal will be ditched.

Thankfully, there are loving people out there who make it their life’s goal to care for these “forgotten animals.”

The data is pretty astounding. PETA has data that shows the overwhelming influx of animals that enter shelters each year. Just counting dogs and cats, over 6 million pets find their way into shelters in the US each year:

Every year in the U.S., more than 6 million lost, abandoned, or unwanted dogs and cats enter animal shelters.

Angela Adan is one of the people who sacrifice for these incredible animals.

Angela is an animal rescuer and advocate from Tehachapi, California. She loves her work as it saves many lives a year. As part of the job, she says that she really gets emotional when taking in strays. Seeing so much abuse over the years has stopped her emotional response in most situations.

While often not showing her emotion, one little pup brought her to tears recently.

After a few minutes with a special little pup, Angela found herself moved to tears in a way that she never expected.

Getting a tip of a dog in need, Angela got in her car and started driving.

After driving for four hours, she arrived at the rescue to see the dog she had been told about. From what she had been told, she didn’t know how bad the situation she was walking in to was going to be.

The little Chihuahua that she picked up was incredibly deformed.

After unwrapping the cloth that the shelter swaddled the tiny dog in, she saw the reason that the dog was abandoned. With multiple deformities, the little dog was misshapen and shivering.

After a quick once-over, Angela saw all that was wrong with the dog.

The dog had some serious health issues. The Chihuahua had bulging eyes that protruded from its head and a surplus of teeth that made it almost impossible to open and close its mouth. Finally, the dog had splayed front feet jutting from either side of its ribcage, making walking an impossible feat.

The next part is what caused Angela to cry.

As she was looking the dog over and petting its bony build, it lifted its head and gave a feeble few licks to her face. Realizing that the dog was thanking her for being kind, the tears started to flow.

The dog would never make it in a shelter, and so something had to be done.

A shelter would never be able to take a dog like this. It would be a death sentence to send this creature to the shelter. It had too many health issues and would never be adopted, leading to further action, often euthanization.

Angela’s heart went out and she knew what to do.

Realizing that this dog needed something special, she decided to adopt her. The little dog would join Angela’s rescue group at home, where all the special dogs went.

The dog’s name is Freddie Mercury, and she has been catching up on all the love she never received

Probably naming her after her teeth, Angela named her Freddie Mercury! She loves on her every day, wanting to make up for the lack of love her previous owners gave her!

“People often ask me how do I do it?” Angela said. “How can you foster a special needs dog knowing she could pass away at any day? The answer is simple, dogs teach me to just have fun and to be in the moment. I do my best to just enjoy this time right here, right now, and not worry about what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow. Life is short, take breaks when you need it and just enjoy the moment you have right this second.”
