As Hurricane Ida swept through Louisiana, the negative impact was felt across the state and beyond.

There are a few stories, however, that have come out of the storm that remind us just how caring and giving people are to others.

This particular story shows that kindness is extended to animals in such times, too.

A cry for help is answered.

Daniel Fears of Madisonville, Louisiana decided to ride out the storm at his home near New Orleans. In a viral video of his experience dealing with the storm’s devastation, he encounters a baby deer crying out for its mom.

“I started hearing the baby dear crying..calling for mom and I was like, alright I’ve got to put my bathing suit on and go get the deer.” – Daniel Fears

Daniel shared photos and video of him feeding the deer some blueberries and he also gave his new friend a name, Buck.

“I fed him and gave him what I could…The hardest thing was I didn’t know what he wanted…they get dehydrated real quick so gettin fluids in him was the main goal. He was very traumatized in the beginning. He kind of warmed up to me the next day.” – Fears

Daniel shared that Buck loved watermelon but wasn’t too keen on lettuce.

“He took a bite of lettuce, spit it out.”

The deer was feeling very at home with Daniel while flooding from the storm persisted.

“It was very bizarre because when we were inside, we bonded very well…he followed me everywhere. I put him in the bed with me he smelled great…he didn’t smell like a stinky dog either” – Fears

When it came time for Buck to venture outdoors, Daniel noticed he wasn’t sticking around.

When the water was down again, Daniel let Buck out but it turned out to be the last time the two would see each other.

“The first day the water was down, I let him out there…he was gone.” – Fears

Daniel shared the news in a video,

“So he’s gone it’s a good thing.”

His positive outlook, humor and selfless devotion to the little fawn is inspiring.

“Buck was at the house for three days…It was a very good feeling knowing he wanted to get out…I’m very confident he made it to his mom.”- Fears

When he shared his feelings about why the baby deer left, he joked,

“I’m good lookin but obviously not enough for a deer.”
