There’s no getting around it, baby animals are cute. Too cute. Arguably some of the cutest baby animals are the ones that grow up to be huge. Knowing their tinyness is temporary just adds to the level of cuteness they have.
Knowing that, is there any animal that gets cuter OR larger, than elephants? We don’t think so. When they are born, they weigh in around 250 lbs and grow from there. We also want the world to know just how cute they truly are. Here are 50 examples.
1. Snuggle buddy
That’s a lot of weight to bear, but we would absolutely give it a try to get some snuggle time in with a willing calf.
2. Fuzzier baby!
Some adult elephants have hair on their heads as well – and oddly enough, it’s not to keep them warm but rather to carry heat away from their bodies in hot climates.
3. Fuzzy baby
But from its fuzzy little head to its tiny trunk, we just can’t stop saying “awww.”
4. Elephant games
It might be hard to tell this is a baby with no other creature nearby for scale, but its tiny body gives it away.
That and the fact that it wants to play!
5. All smiles
It looks like a cute cartoon elephant with a big smile – we’re thinking Dumbo.
And check out that fuzz going all the way down its back!
6. Getting some comfort
We’re not sure what the pink tutu is all about, but it only serves to make the whole photo more “aww”-inducing.
Fun fact! from r/babyelephants
7. In the deep end
How cute is it to see this momma and baby elephant after their big dip?
8. Cooling off
This baby and its momma are getting a good wash down AND drink at the same time in Thailand.
And we’re pretty sure this little one is having a great time.
9. Obstacles
Sometimes we have to learn that hard way that we can’t always take the shortcut.
Good thing mom is there to help out if necessary.
10. A case of the Mondays
You can do your best, but occasionally the world puts just enough in your way to make you faceplant.
The important thing is that you get back up again.
11. Friendly face
And that hairy little chin is almost too much!
We’re not sure if this baby is communicating with its trunk yet or just swinging it in every direction until something feels right.
Cute baby wants to tell you to hang in there since the weekend is almost here ππ€ from r/babyelephants
12. Struttin’ its stuff
Maybe it knows just how awesome all that fuzz looks and is showing it off to its pals.
We’d walk with attitude too if we were that adorable.
Excuse me, but I’d like for you to know that because of your love, I’m feeling like a million bananas, so thank you very much ππ from r/babyelephants
13. Small world
After all, what’s better than making new friends?
Nature is pretty amazing, isn’t it?
14. Daily constitutional
We’re pretty sure our elephant would have the best style in town too, just like this one.
15. Tired in a tire
Sometimes you need to take a break from all that playing and world-exploring.
This little guy looks pretty pooped.
16. Head-on
And those ears! Do you think he can fly?
17. Time to chill
He looks positively exhausted by his day, but no less cute than normal.
18. Baby love
This nuzzle is so sweet we hardly have words.
Just look at those intertwined trunks. That’s love.
19. Palling around
Just look at these little ones having a playdate.
In fact, elephants and zebras get along just great.
20. It’s wet in here!
Apparently, this little elephant isn’t too fond of the water yet. Or maybe it’s not so easy to get out when your legs are still short.
21. Get my good side
But that side-eye and sass make this photo a classic!
22. Snow nose
And the babies seem to love playing in the stuff.
But while this photo is cute, many animal advocates have expressed concern about keeping elephants in cold-weather climates without suitable heating.
23. Feelin’ it
It almost looks like it’s in a shampoo commercial!
24. Eat your greens
They are likely “baby tusks,” which fall out after about a year and are replaced with adult ones. (Just like baby teeth!)
25. Periscope up
This baby is doing just fine following mom, even though the deep end is still a bit too deep.
26. Family photo
We love how the littlest one is trying to climb into the shot.
Are the young ones siblings? We’re not sure. Elephants can have calves around 4 years apart.
27. Nice and cozy
Those two front legs nestled up by its chin almost look like a purposeful ploy to get its way. (To which, of course, we’d say yes!)
28. Bottoms up!
Now, we’re not sure it’s the same for a bottle, but if you’re going to take care of a baby elephant, you can expect to feed it up to 20 pints a day for those years.
That’s a heck of a committment.
29. Whoa, look at this!
How often do elephants get to see sea lions?
She sure was enjoying herself.
Animal handlers at Oregon Zoo took this baby elephant around to meet the other animals. The sea lions were her favourite. ( X-post r/aww ) from r/babyelephants
30. Lap elephant
It’s clearly at a rescue facility and quite familiar with humans.
We just hope it’s not like a dog that grows up and STILL thinks it can sit on a lap!
31. House elephants
This little guy is 14 months old and has a favorite couch at the rescue where he lives.
If you want to see just what an elephant will do to your home, you can watch the rest of the video here – but you can probably guess that it doesn’t end well for the furniture.
32. Learning to swim
Luckily, mom is there to help and is leading her babe across the shallow currents with her trunk.
Leave it to mom to always save the day!
33. Darn skippy
But it sure does look like it’s skipping!
Who knows? Maybe this babe was caught at a joyful moment.
34. Just plain cute
There’s just something about this small one’s big ears that have us staring.
Can you even be in a mad mood while looking at baby elephants?
35. Playtime
We don’t think this little guy is ready to kick a ball yet, but he’s learning!
36. Pool party
But in the meantime, we don’t mind seeing these calves have some summer fun!
Just look at that second one foist itself in!
37. Winner takes all
We’re pretty sure this match had a clear winner.
38. BFFs
But usually, elephants touch trunks to console one another, so perhaps while they look like they’re having a good laugh, it’s a different kind of moment entirely.
Either way, it sure looks like friendship.
39. They’re only young once
It won’t take long for this to get ugly (or at least be over quickly) once this little one grows up.
The calf sure looks like it’s having a blast though!
40. Scampering away
Look at it go!
Think you could win a race against him or her?
41. Goin’ to the car wash
This is one baby who is eager for bath time!
42. Making friends
And this little one is clearly making friends early.
We see a Disney movie in the making.
43. Scaredy pants
Until Mr. Goat came around.
We didn’t know elephants could run that fast!
44. Tongues out
Maybe it’s both.
Or perhaps it’s trying to intimidate us, in which case we think it’s going to need a few more years (unless mom’s nearby – THEN we’re afraid).
45. A show of affection
It does look pretty sweet though, so maybe we can go with the first guess.
46. Unlikely friends
Normally, we wouldn’t expect either one to walk into this situation, but these two either already know one another or are willing to see what’s up.
And we got an adorable photo out of it.
47. It’s Dumbo!
Who said elephants couldn’t fly?
Ok, well, everyone, but it sure looks like this calf is trying to emulate the world’s most famous elephant.
48. Those ears!
The wide stance, the mud dripping off its body, and even the look on its little face all scream “playtime!”
49. Elephant’s best friend
We doubt it’s potty trained though. Maybe that’s why the dogs don’t seem so impressed – they know they’re going to get blamed if there’s an accident.
Still, they seem pretty chill for having such an out-of-the-ordinary houseguest.
50. Double moon
Sometimes you get a bad angle and you just have to work with it.
Then again, those little bums are still pretty cute.
See? After 50 examples, you can’t help but agree with us: Baby elephants are the best baby animals in the world!
