Mýa Monay Davis and her dog Simba grew up together. And for 19 years they were inseparable.

They were best friends.

“Simba and I have been friends since we first met,” Davis told The Dodo. “I wouldn’t have wanted to have any other dog to be my childhood bestie.”

But after 19 long years together, age began to takes its toll on Simba. Like many senior dogs, Simba had suffered health problems over the last few years of his life and he was slowing down.

It was obvious that Simba was nearing the end of his life.

Davis was devastated by the thought that she might have to put her old friend down to end his suffering. But she knew that it was something she might have to do.

“I was just preparing myself to lose my best friend,” Davis said. “While I was laying on the floor with him, I was telling him that it’s OK to let go. I was recommended by a vet to go ahead and put him down, but I didn’t want him to go out that way — especially if it wasn’t time. During the conversation I told him that I would be OK, I began to cry,” she explains.

That’s when Simba did something to reassure her.

“He began to wipe my face,” Davis said. “I could feel that he was letting me know that everything was going to be OK.”

The gesture warmed Davis’ heart and made her know that they would always be close no matter what. Even if the day came that Simba did cross over the rainbow bridge.

Davis posted the video of her buddy wiping away her tears on Facebook where their story ended up going viral.

Her story was shared all over the internet.

“I have to put my 19-year-old dog down soon. Him and I had a talk early this evening about letting go, so it can just be peaceful when he passes on, instead of being surrounded by strangers. I started to cry mid-conversation and this is him wiping my tears away,” she wrote on Love What Matters.

A lot of people reached out to Davis to offer their condolences and share stories about their furry loved ones.

“I mean the normal videos ya’ll post are cute and all. But this. Lordy, this. As a dog mom of 3, one of whom just entered the “geriatric years”, this has me ugly crying. Running mascara, snot, and all. Sending love to you, fellow dog mama. Your Little guy sure does love you,” said one Facebook user.

Thankfully, Simba’s health has somewhat improved since then. But he is a 19-year-old dog and the day will come where he does pass on.

But thanks to this experience, Davis will be better prepared for it.

“As long as I know that he’s going to be OK,” Davis said, “I’ll forever be at peace.”
