When we have a connection with another living being – it’s a bond that is truly unique and can never be replaced.

Two cats, named Alesana and Sen, had one of those connections. These two furry best friends had lived with one another for most of their entire lives – they had gotten along since the first day they met.

Day in and day out, Alesana and Sen spent their time cuddling, playing, and napping together. One of their favorite past-times and bonding moments was when they would clean each other’s ears. They were inseparable.

Sadly, when Alesana was just 8-years-old, she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on Christmas morning, 2018.

Of course, there’s no way to explain to a cat that their best friend is no longer around and won’t be coming back. Sen was confused as to why Alesana wasn’t by her side anymore. As days passed, Sen’s family had to watch their precious 4-year-old cat mourn the passing of her best buddy.

“I think Sen knows she is gone,” Emma Pearce, Sen’s mom, told The Dodo. “She often sits at my window next to my front door just looking out for hours on end. She will also walk around the house looking into rooms where Alesana would often sit.”

The family recently received Alesana’s ashes – along with paw prints and a tuft of her fur. This sparked an idea that could help Sen cope.

Pearce thought it would help provide comfort to Sen if she could smell and feel Alesana’s fur. So – she decided to place the small black tuft in front of Sen to see how she’d react. Her reaction is quite possibly the sweetest thing ever.

“When she saw Alesana’s fur she instantly started to lick it and rub her face on it,” Pearce said.

In an instant, Sen knew that the fur had belonged to her late best friend. Pearce had hopes that smelling the fur would help her understand that Alesana was no longer here, process that, and move on.

“We try and give her as much love and cuddles as we can so she doesn’t feel too lonely,” Pearce said.

Although Alesana is gone – she will forever be in the family’s heart – especially Sen’s.

Pearce has now shown the tuft of fur to Sen a few times – and each time, she has the same heart-melting reaction. Soon, after they’ve had some time to deal with their grief, Pearce plans on placing the fur in a frame. They’ll hang it someplace where they will always be reminded of her.

The sweet cat’s ashes are also displayed in a beautiful urn with her collar wrapped around it. Sen wears the exact same matching collar.

This isn’t the only time that a cat has displayed an incredible sense of emotion over a close companion’s death.

In 2016, a grieving cat missed her owner so much that she had spent a year living on top of her grave. The poor cat was found crying while lying on the burial plot and the photos of the sweet animal went viral.

The cat would be offered food and water from neighbors nearby, but the cat would refuse. It would just roll around on top of the grave and sleep there every single night.

“We take some food and water to the cat but she still likes to go ‘home’. She’s at the grave every day,” said a resident.

“Despite being offered new homes, even a year later the cat can still be seen at the grave night and day,” reports Daily Mail UK.

Another viral video of a cat recognizing their deceased owner in a video caused a bit of controversy in 2018.

The video below supposedly shows a cat recognizing her late owner in a video on a tablet – however, the internet has doubted whether or not it was staged or fake.

What do you think? Do cats have the ability to sense grief and sadness?
