Cat Still Waits Outside To See Her Deceased Dog Friend
Baby Grey and friends were an unlikely pair but the best of friends.

Kitty cat Baby Grey and Gracie the dog were the best of friends. They would have regularly scheduled playdates where Baby Grey would walk over to Gracie’s house and wait for her to come and play outside.

So there was a large void left in Baby Grey’s life when Gracie passed away. Poor little Baby Grey would still hold vigil for her dear old friend.

She just sits in front of the sliding glass door at Gracie’s house and waits there as if her old friend will return. Sometimes she waits as long as 20 minutes.

Gracie’s mom, Shea Belew Brennaman, said she first noticed Baby Grey visiting her yard about two and a half years ago.

“I think it lives two cul-de-sacs over from us and I don’t know its name,” the fourth-grade teacher from Decatur Alabama told The Dodo. “Me and my family just refer to it as Baby Grey.”

Brennaman said she spotted Baby Grey in her fenced in yard one day. Grace, who is supposed to be a guard dog, was more interested in making friends than keeping Baby Grey out.

“Gracie was an American Eskimo and stayed outside almost all the time,” Brennaman said. “She loved nature and, while she was a protector of our house, she loved all other animals and they loved her.”

Gracie was known to make friends with chipmunks, rabbits, hawks, and anyone else who happened to wander into her yard. But she was especially fond of Baby Grey.

“Gracie accepted her into our yard immediately and the two became fast friends,” Brennaman said.

That’s when Baby Grey started to frequently show up to visit Gracie.

“We would leave Gracie tomatoes on our porch, as they were her favorite treat, and she would share them with the cat,” Brennaman said.

This was a big deal for Gracie because she wasn’t much into sharing.

“When Baby Grey started coming over frequently the two of them shared tomatoes and sunbathed together,” she said. “Sunbathing was their absolute favorite activity. But Baby Grey and Gracie’s close relationship made sense to Brennaman.

Gracie was always doing things for the people she loved, including saving Brennaman from a water moccasin when Gracie was just 8-months-old.

“She had a sweet personality,” Brennaman noted. “[She] was a friend to all and was very motherly, especially to our Yorkie.”

But Gracie’s days of playing in the yard became less frequent after her 12th birthday.

It was later discovered that Gracie has lymphoma.

“Gracie spent most of her remaining days on the cold porch,” Brennaman said.

“They had that kind of connection where nothing needed to be said or done. They just wanted to be with each other.”

Gracie died only a month after her diagnosis. But her passing seems to have hit Baby Grey the hardest. She seems to be in denial.

“Since Gracie’s death, several times a week, Baby Grey will come to our porch,” Brennaman said. “She will first come right up to the door and look in for Gracie.”

“I don’t know how long she waits, sometimes she’ll wait for 20 minutes and then she will walk away to the porch where she will sit a while before she eventually lays down and sunbathes.”

It kind of breaks Brennaman’s heart that Baby Grey misses Gracie so much but it does warm her heart to know that the two were so close.
