Cat And Chicken Found Together During California Wildfire

September 4th, 2018

The Carr Wildlife was a huge fire that tore through California, burning 200,000 acres. The fire raged for weeks before it was finally contained by firefighters on August 30, 2018. The fire was devastating for both the people and animals that lived in the area.

Through all the destruction, there was one glimmer of hope.

As firefighters from the Grass Valley Fire Department were looked through a burned-down home for survivors, they found two unlikely animals cuddling together: a cat and chicken.

The two animals sat in a doorway, staying close to each other. Both animals were shaken up and had burns that required treatment, but the most important thing was they had survived the fire.

“The animals had survived one of the most destructive fires in memory finding comfort in each other in the doorway of a home,” the Grass Valley Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

Once they saw the cat and chicken were both okay, the firefighters started looking for a dish so they could give the animals some water. They quickly found one, and the animals gratefully drank.

Once the cat and chicken were hydrated, the firefighters decided to bring them to the SPCA. They picked up the animals, but they both began protesting—after their ordeal, they didn’t want to be separated. And so, the firefighters put the two sweet animals in the same carrier.

At the SPCA, the cat and chicken’s burns were treated. Thankfully, they’re both doing well!

“The firefighters checked on the pair a day later, both the cat and chicken are expected to make full recoveries from their injuries,” the fire department wrote on Facebook.

On Facebook, everyone was curious to know if the cat and chicken’s owners had been reunited with their animals. The fire department happily shared that both animals had found their owners.

After the story went viral, the animals’ owners talked to The Today Show about what happened with their cat and chicken.

“We were kind of shocked to see what looked like our chicken in these news reports,” Niko Kuyper, the chicken’s owner, told TODAY. “We have six chickens, but this one has a bit of a personality; she’s a bit feistier, so we think that probably helped her through all this.”

Whiskers’ owner, Jennie Sierra, was also so happy to have her sweet cat home.

“It’s an absolute miracle,” she said.
