Ape Action Africa has seen a lot of apes since the non-profit dedicated to the conservation of endangered gorillas, chimpanzees, and monkeys was first started in 1996.

You’d think they’d have seen it all when it comes to apes.

But even today they find animals in their care that surprise them, take Bobo for example. Bobo is a Western Lowland Gorilla who was brought into the non-profits care in 1996.

He surprised workers with the relationship he formed with a bush baby, also known as galagos, or nagapies.

A bush baby is a small nocturnal primate that is native to Africa.

“On his morning checks, our gorilla caregiver discovered Bobo cradling a young, wild bush baby,” Ape Action Africa spokeswoman Elissa O’Sullivan told Bored Panda.

“The bush baby showed no fear of Bobo, moving around his body and spending time hopping around in an open grassy area, before choosing to return to Bobo.”

What’s most strange about this situation is that Bobo’s relationship isn’t really fitting with his status.

He’s the dominant male of his group which also includes three females and three other males. Two younger males even tried to challenge Bobo for his position and failed.

So, sanctuary keepers were surprised to see the gentle side he takes on with the bush baby.

They were also curious as to why the bush baby was hanging around Bobo in the first place.

“Bush babies are usually nocturnal, so it is very rare to see one during the day. We have never witnessed a wild primate interacting with a rescued one at Mefou Sanctuary,” O’Sullivan said.

But the sanctuary keepers weren’t the only ones confused about this relationship.

“Bobo’s group-mates were curious about the bush baby and hoped that he might share it with them, but Bobo kept the bush baby to himself,” O’Sullivan said.

They had hung out for two long hours before Bobo brought the bush baby to a set of trees within his enclosure that the bush baby disappeared into.

The difference in size between this two is just astounding. Bobo weighs 200kg while the bush baby weighs just 200 grams.

He looks super tiny in Bobo’s giant hand.

He’s barely the size of one of his fingers. But the bush baby has no fear of him whatsoever. Bobo is extremely gentle with his tiny buddy. You can watch a video of Bobo and his bush baby below.
