Visitors of Los Angeles are often struck by the packs of stray dogs littering the streets— but sadly for residents, it’s a common sight. It is estimated that in Los Angeles, there are between 26,000 and 44,000 stray dogs roaming at any time— but the animal rescue Hope for Paws is determined to make a difference.
The organization was founded by Eldad Hagar ten years ago. He started filming his rescue endeavors, earning over 3.5 million devoted subscribers and fans. Eldad’s videos are always intense and emotional, but by far the best rescue is that of Benji— one of LA’s many homeless pups.
Hope for Paws had received a call from a concerned resident about a stray, matted dog that had been roaming the area.
Recruiting the help of dog lover Lisa Chiarelli, the organization instantly sprung into action. When they arrived in the neighborhood, they spotted Benji, the dog in question. He was mangy and matted, his fur protruding in giant clumps.
“[He had] one of the worst mattings I have ever seen in my life,” revealed Eldad.
Although Eldad And Lisa kept their distance, Benji noticed the pair watching him and immediately started to bolt. After chasing the dog through the city’s streets, they finally managed to get him on a leash.
The dog had been homeless his whole life and was terrified of human contact.
In the video, he squeals in incessant terror, not understanding the humans are trying to help. As they show their kindness with snuggles and pets, he finally starts to calm down.
After Eldad and Lisa get Benji into the car, he proceeds to receive hours of grooming and medical care.
In the video description, Eldad writes:
“Physically, he was so badly matted, covered with ticks and fleas.”
“Mentally, Benji was living on the streets all his life, so human contact was hard for him to get used to.”
After being cleaned, shaved, and deloused, Benji looks like a brand-new dog, but his rescuers knew the journey was just beginning.
Benji was ultimately placed with Lisa to be fostered and rehabilitated.
For the next ten days, he avoided human contact, refusing attention and looking for places to hide.
Lisa didn’t know how to help Benji get out of his funk. Luckily, her Pitbull mixes Lola and Frankie knew just the trick.
Slowly engaging and building his trust, Lisa’s sweet dogs helped bring Benji out of his shell.
The dog you see playing in the video is a far cry from the one who was rescued in the streets.
After his rehabilitation, Benji was placed into the care of PAL rescue, who later organized his adoption into a new, loving home. Despite all the obstacles he’d encountered, Benji was given a new lease on life.
“[His] soul has healed,” said Eldad.
Since being uploaded, the heartwarming rescue has been viewed over 10 million times.
“I straight away started crying.”
